Inspiration
Our team consists of ultimate frisbee players. When it comes to ultimate frisbee we face a common issue whereby the players can often get too close to one another which can cause a dangerous play. In ultimate frisbee, the defending player is within 10 feet of the thrower, a double team will be called. Oftentimes, beginner players will be confused when playing the game as they are often distracted by what is going on in the game and are unaware of their distance.
What it does
To counteract that problem, we created a sensor project to buzz if the player is too close and help beginner players maintain a safe disc space, making it easier for them to distance themselves space. Thus creating a safe and fun environment for them.
How we built it
We integrated ultrasound scanners and a buzzer to the breadboard to scan for the distance between players and a buzzer to alert the players if they are getting too close. We then proceeded to code for the system to check for a fixed range of distance and then to buzz when the distance was within the range.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, we were facing a lack of equipment. However, we worked with whatever we had and we worked our way around it by creating a simple system for the buzzer to sound when the distance is too close.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite not being non-engineering students, we researched ways to work an Arduino and piece together the issue we commonly face in ultimate frisbee with the skills and knowledge we have learned in our research to solve a common problem. Hence creating a useful tool for our game plays.
What we learned
We have learned that the level of skills and knowledge does not matter but it is the determination and teamwork that we can create a useful project. Combining with whatever knowledge and skills we have, it can be a powerful tool in creating a solution to a problem usually faced.
What's next for D = MC^2
With the versatility of our project, we would like to take it on a larger scale and implement iit in other sports. Many sports have a fixed set of rules where players should be a certain distance from one another to ensure safe play. Safe play is important in sports as we would like to reduce the number of injuries so everyone can have fun safely. Our project helps to create a safe environment in sports.
