Inspiration

Every night before the Bolt hackathon, I couldn’t fall asleep, too many ideas and too much stress racing through my mind. At the same time, my child also needed help drifting off. Instead of counting sheep in my head, I decided to build something to do it for us, something gentle, customizable, and effortless. That’s how the idea for Bolt Sleep Counter was born: a simple tool to help anyone (including myself and my kid) relax and fall asleep anywhere.

What it does

Bolt Sleep Counter uses a single prompt to generate a calming, customizable sleep counting tool.

  • Choose what to count (bolt, sheep, stars, deep breaths, etc.)
  • Set the number range (e.g., 1–100)
  • Adjust the counting speed to match your breathing or mood
  • Count in any language supported by your device
  • It even works completely offline, perfect for flights, road trips, or anywhere you need a moment of calm.

How we built it

We built it with a single, thoughtfully crafted prompt using bolt.new. The prompt tells Bolt to:

  1. Generate numbers in sequence within a given range
  2. Apply user-defined options like object type and counting speed
  3. Use the device’s preferred language The result is a lightweight, instantly usable app that feels personal, thanks to Bolt’s natural language generation.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest part was designing a single prompt flexible enough to handle customization without breaking or becoming confusing. We had to balance simplicity and user control, making sure the counting stayed calming rather than overwhelming.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a genuinely useful tool in record time, powered only by one prompt
  • Created something that helps real people (my child and I) sleep better
  • Made it work fully offline, so it’s always available even mid‑flight

What we learned

We learned how powerful a single well‑designed prompt can be and how even small, focused ideas can have real impact. Simplicity doesn’t mean limited; it can mean exactly what someone needs, right when they need it.

What's next for Bolt Sleep Counter - One Shot Prompt

  • Add soothing soundscapes (rain, waves) synced to the count
  • Support themes or visuals (like animated stars or sheep)
  • Let users share their custom sleep counters with friends or family
  • Explore deeper integrations: bedtime reminders, guided breathing modes, or pairing with smart home lights
