Inspiration

Cyphr was inspired by the raw energy of Krump, where stage names, crews, and battles shape identity, yet those moments often vanish in social feeds. I saw the same struggle with independent music artists, whose songs, covers, and photos rarely get preserved or valued. That sparked the idea to build Cyphr — a platform that keeps these cultural milestones alive on-chain and gives fans a meaningful way to support the creators they love.

What it does

Cyphr brings hip-hop culture on-chain. It lets dancers and artists mint their stage names, battle wins, and milestones as Soulbound Tokens, creating a permanent record of their identity and legacy. At the same time, artists can launch Mascot NFTs — digital collectibles tied to their journey — so fans can support them in ways that last forever.

How we built it

Smart Contracts (Solidity + Hardhat): • StageNameSBT.sol — non-transferable Soulbound Token contract for stage names and battle wins. • MascotNFT.sol — ERC-721 contract with royalty support for artist-launched collectibles. • Testnet Deployment: Contracts deployed on Polygon Mumbai for fast, low-cost transactions. • Storage: Metadata and media pinned on IPFS for decentralized permanence. • Frontend (React + Ethers.js): Simple demo app to connect wallet, mint an SBT, and view collectibles. • Free Tools Only: Used open-source frameworks (OpenZeppelin, Hardhat), free testnet tokens, and free hosting (e.g. Netlify/Vercel) to keep costs at zero. • Workflow: 1. Dancer connects wallet → mints stage name SBT. 2. Profile auto-builds timeline of achievements. 3. Artist launches Mascot NFT → fans collect on testnet.

Challenges we ran into

No technical team: As a solo founder with a vision rooted in culture, not coding, building smart contracts and a frontend from scratch was a steep learning curve. • Onboarding artists: Translating complex Web3 concepts like wallets, SBTs, and NFTs into simple, usable flows for dancers and musicians was harder than expected. • Time & resources: With no budget and limited hands, everything had to be built using open-source tools, testnets, and free hosting. • Balancing culture & tech: The biggest challenge was making sure the product stays authentic to hip-hop while being technically sound.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Shaped Cyphr’s vision from a Krump-inspired idea into a platform that can scale across hip-hop — dance, music, graffiti, and fashion. • Designed the core architecture: Soulbound Tokens for identity, Mascot NFTs for collectibles, and on-chain profiles for legacy. • Built the brand and narrative that connects Web3 with culture in a way that feels authentic and accessible. • Created a working repo and project foundation without a technical team or funding — proving our ability to move fast with limited resources. • Most importantly, we’ve shown how big Cyphr can be: from preserving underground dance battles in India to becoming the global platform where every hip-hop artist’s journey lives forever on-chain.

What we learned

How to translate culture into code — taking raw elements like stage names, battles, and music drops and mapping them into Web3 primitives like SBTs and NFTs. • The importance of keeping Web3 simple for non-technical creators, so dancers and artists can use it without needing to understand blockchain jargon. • That even without a technical team or budget, open-source tools and free resources are enough to build the foundation of a global idea. • How big the opportunity really is: hip-hop creators everywhere need a platform that preserves identity, legacy, and gives fans real ways to support.

What's next for CYPHR

MVP Launch: Build and release the first working demo where dancers can mint their stage name as a Soulbound Token and showcase it on a profile. • Pilot Campaign: Partner with underground dancers and crews in India to run a “Claim Your Stage Name” activation. • Expand Beyond Dance: Add features for independent music artists, graffiti writers, and streetwear drops — covering every element of hip-hop. • Community Building: Grow a global fan + artist base through Discord, IRL battles, and early NFT drops. • Funding & Team: Bring on technical collaborators and advisors to accelerate development and scale Cyphr into a global platform.
