Inspiration

Modern workflows are split across multiple devices, yet moving information between them is still surprisingly stressful. People still send files to themselves on WhatsApp, use USB cables, manually transfer copied text, or rely on cloud uploads for simple tasks.

CYPHER was built to eliminate that friction.

The idea started as a fast local file transfer tool between phones and PCs, but gradually evolved into a local-first cross-device productivity ecosystem focused on convenience, continuity, and workflow efficiency.

What it does

CYPHER connects phones and PCs over the same WiFi network and enables:

  • Fast local file transfers
  • Clipboard synchronization
  • Remote keyboard input
  • Remote app control
  • Guest access through QR sessions
  • Screenshot and screen recording controls
  • Task/process management
  • Device communication without cloud dependency

The goal is to make phones and PCs feel like one connected workspace instead of two separate devices.

How we built it

CYPHER uses a local client-server architecture.

The desktop application runs a local server that exposes secured endpoints over the local network, while the mobile application communicates with it through HTTP requests and session-based communication.

The system was built using:

  • Python
  • Flask
  • Flutter
  • Local networking APIs
  • QR-based session authentication
  • File streaming and transfer systems

Most communication happens locally over WiFi, which improves speed, reduces latency, and minimizes reliance on external cloud infrastructure.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was managing reliable communication between devices across local networks while keeping the experience simple for users.

Other challenges included:

  • device discovery
  • session persistence
  • clipboard synchronization
  • file transfer reliability
  • remote command execution
  • handling permissions across platforms
  • optimizing workflow responsiveness

Balancing functionality with simplicity was also difficult because the project gradually expanded beyond file transfer into a broader productivity ecosystem.

What we learned

Building CYPHER taught us a lot about:

  • local networking
  • client-server architecture
  • workflow design
  • cross-device communication
  • API structuring
  • real-world product design
  • and user-focused engineering

More importantly, it reinforced how powerful convenience can be. Small workflow frustrations repeated daily create massive friction, and solving them can dramatically improve productivity.

What's next for CYPHER

Future plans include:

  • more advanced remote controls
  • improved automation
  • smarter device synchronization
  • better onboarding
  • enhanced security systems
  • broader platform support
  • and deeper workflow integrations

The long-term vision is to evolve CYPHER into a seamless local-first ecosystem for device communication and productivity.

Although this hackathon does not include a cash prize, I would genuinely appreciate opportunities that could come from this project such as internships, mentorship, collaboration, or even the chance to continue developing CYPHER further with industry guidance.

I would also be incredibly grateful if the project is considered worthy of being featured or talked about on your socials or within your community, as visibility and feedback are extremely valuable at this stage of development.
