CymbalMart Party Planner & Shopping Assistant • Inspiration Planning a party should be exciting, not overwhelming. Whether it is a birthday celebration, a family gathering, or a special occasion, organizing an event often means juggling multiple tasks: deciding on a theme, planning activities, choosing decorations, preparing invitations, and finding suitable products within a budget. We wanted to simplify this experience by bringing event planning and shopping assistance together in one intelligent application. This inspired us to build CymbalMart Party Planner & Shopping Assistant - a smarter way to turn an event idea into an actionable plan. • What It Does CymbalMart is an AI-powered event-planning and shopping assistant designed to help users move from an initial idea to a more organized celebration. Key features include: • AI Party Planning: Generate personalized party-planning ideas based on the occasion and the user's requirements. • Conversational AI Assistant: Interact with an AI assistant to explore ideas and get planning guidance. • Smart Shopping Assistance: Help users identify relevant products and shopping needs for their event. • Personalized Invitations: Generate invitation content tailored to the celebration. • Structured Planning: Transform event requirements into a more organized plan that users can review and refine. Our goal is to reduce the friction between imagining an event and organizing the details needed to bring it to life. • How We Built It We built CymbalMart as a modern web application using React 19, TypeScript, Vite, and Tailwind CSS 4. The interface is designed to provide an accessible and interactive experience for exploring event-planning features. For AI capabilities, we integrated Google's Gemini API through the @google/genai SDK. A Node.js and Express backend provides API endpoints for conversational assistance, parsing party-planning requirements, and generating personalized invitations. The application separates the user interface from server-side AI processing. Environment variables are used to configure the Gemini API key, helping keep sensitive credentials out of client-side application code. The project uses a component-based architecture to organize its interface and application features, with Vite supporting the frontend development and production build workflow. • Challenges We Faced One of the main challenges was bringing several related workflows-conversation, party-plan generation, and invitation creation-into one coherent user experience. Another challenge was integrating generative AI into a web application while keeping API credentials on the server side. We also had to consider how natural-language requests could be transformed into useful, structured planning information rather than generic suggestions. Preparing the application for deployment presented an additional engineering consideration: the frontend build and the Express-based backend must both be hosted and configured correctly for the AI features to work in production. These challenges reinforced the importance of API design, environment configuration, frontend-backend integration, and testing the complete user journey instead of checking only whether the interface loads. • What We Learned Building CymbalMart strengthened our understanding of full-stack application development and the practical integration of generative AI. We learned how to connect a React and TypeScript frontend to server-side AI services, organize API-driven features, manage configuration through environment variables, and design workflows around real user needs. Most importantly, we learned that a useful AI product is not just about generating text. It is about turning user intent into clear, relevant, and actionable outcomes. • What's Next We envision evolving CymbalMart into a more complete event-planning platform with budget-aware product recommendations, improved personalization, richer shopping integrations, saved event plans, and a smoother conversational planning experience. Our vision is simple: one idea, one intelligent assistant, and a more effortless way to plan a memorable celebration.
