Inspiration

Cylinder: Car Assembly Puzzles was inspired by a road trip gone wrong, leading to an interest in understanding the core components inside automobiles. The game's ambience relaxes the player, centering on the "zen" of assembling mechanical parts to fit with one another. Supporting the gameplay loop of unintentional learning, each puzzle was meticulously designed in accordance with curriculum created by the The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

What it does

Each puzzle in Cylinder is designed to help the player unwind while subconsciously learning how core components of a car go together. Each puzzle is based on knowledge required for the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification tests, which regulate the industry standard Blue Seal certification for automotive repair specialists. After learning core concepts from each puzzle, players can enter a review loop to maintain this knowledge. Players can optionally track their progress to the ASE certification tests as they solve each car assembly puzzle.

How we built it

It was integral that the app be in 3D, to allow players to rotate and interact with each car component in a natural way. To leverage lighting and shader techniques for these 3D components, Unity was chosen as the game engine. Components were modeled in-house with Blender.

Challenges we ran into

The core challenge was in how to integrate ads in a way that felt non-intrusive to the experience. Through beta-testing and collecting user feedback, we decided on the optimal cadence and placement of ads to balance their obstructive effect to the gameplay with overall user satisfaction.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The key accomplishment is the overall look and feel of the game. Each puzzle is succinct, each 3D component minimalist, and each concept simplified. Players can enjoy the game through two lenses: the satisfaction of assembly, and the joy of learning something new.

What we learned

It was of the utmost importance to scope down the game, distilling it to its essence. Initially, the first launch of the game was meant to encompass the entire A1-A9 test series from the ASE, however we decided instead to focus on the A1 and gather feedback on the puzzles through publication in order to further refine future puzzles. This decision proved to be especially fruitful in helping us improve future iterations of the app.

What's next for Cylinder: Car Assembly Puzzles

Since each collection of puzzles is tied to concepts explored in the ASE certification exams, each new update to the game will introduce puzzles pertaining to the 16 ASE test series. Currently, the app has puzzles inspired by the the A1 test in the A1-A9 series. We will continue developing intuitive and relaxing puzzles that also provide value outside of pure fun.
