MindMate – Project Story

Inspiration

During our research, we realized that emotional wellbeing cannot be fully understood through physical sensors alone. Metrics like heart rate, steps, or sleep patterns reveal physical health, but they do not capture emotions such as stress, anxiety, calmness, or focus.

MindMate was inspired by the idea of making emotional awareness more visible and understandable. Instead of relying only on sensor data, the app focuses on how users express themselves through journaling, daily check-ins, and interactions within the app.

By analyzing these reflections over time, MindMate helps users recognize emotional patterns and better understand their mental state.

Our goal was to create a calm and supportive digital space where people can reflect on their emotions, build healthier mental habits, and stay connected with trusted supporters.

What it does

MindMate is a personal emotional wellbeing companion that helps users understand their emotions and receive supportive interactions.

The platform introduces the concept of an Emotional Radar, which visually represents emotional states such as:

  • Stress
  • Mood
  • Energy
  • Focus

Core Features

Emotional Radar

A visual dashboard that represents emotional states in a radar-style interface, allowing users to quickly understand their emotional balance.

Comfort Circle

A trusted support network where users invite close contacts. When a user experiences higher stress levels, supporters receive alerts and can reach out through chat or call.

Journal Space

A private writing environment where users can express feelings, reflect on daily experiences, and track emotional progress.

Shoutout & Problem Corner

A feature that allows users to safely express frustrations or concerns, encouraging emotional release and reflection.

Daily Checklist

A habit tracker that encourages small wellbeing activities such as drinking water, exercising, getting sunlight, and practicing self-care.

Scheduler

Helps users organize daily routines and maintain balance between productivity and relaxation.

Memory Vault

A secure digital vault that stores meaningful images, videos, and voice notes, helping users revisit positive memories during stressful moments.

Real-time Support

Users can communicate with trusted supporters through chat or calls, ensuring emotional support is accessible when needed.

Together, these features create a holistic emotional wellbeing ecosystem.

How we built it

MindMate was designed using a human-centered UX design process focused on emotional comfort and usability.

Design Process

  1. Problem research and emotional wellbeing exploration
  2. Empathy mapping and user persona development
  3. User journey mapping and interaction flow design
  4. Low-fidelity wireframing
  5. High-fidelity UI design and prototyping

Design Principles

The interface was designed using:

  • Calm pastel color palettes
  • Friendly illustrations
  • Minimal cognitive load
  • Clear visual hierarchy

Emotion data is treated as a time-based pattern that can be analyzed over time.

Emotion Trend Formula:

E_trend = (Σ Emotion_i) / n

This helps visualize emotional changes and identify patterns that may require attention.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was representing abstract emotional experiences in a meaningful way.

Emotions are complex and subjective, so translating them into clear visual elements required careful design thinking.

Another challenge was ensuring the interface remained supportive and calming, especially when displaying higher stress levels.

We also had to balance privacy and support features, particularly when designing the Comfort Circle system where emotional updates may be shared with trusted contacts.

Finally, creating a system that encourages reflection without overwhelming users required thoughtful UX design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a design that helps transform emotional reflections into clear and understandable insights.

Key accomplishments include:

  • Designing the Emotional Radar visualization
  • Creating the Comfort Circle support network
  • Developing the Journal and emotional reflection system
  • Building a secure Memory Vault for positive memories
  • Designing a calm and accessible UI experience

Most importantly, MindMate demonstrates how digital tools can help people better understand and reflect on their emotions.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned that emotional wellbeing tools require strong empathetic design thinking.

We discovered that visualizing emotional patterns can improve self-awareness and emotional regulation.

The project also reinforced the importance of simplicity, clarity, and emotional comfort in UX design.

Most importantly, we learned that thoughtful design can help people better understand and respond to their emotional experiences.

What's next for MindMate

Future improvements could include:

  • Emotion heatmaps for long-term patterns
  • Personalized wellness recommendations
  • Guided mindfulness and relaxation features

Our long-term vision is to create a platform where emotional awareness becomes a natural part of everyday digital wellbeing, helping people live healthier and more balanced lives.
