Inspiration

I am drawn to understanding human emotions, especially why loved ones sometimes struggle to get along. When I got the opportunity to study Biochemistry, my curiosity pulled me to emotional health research and in my undergraduate seminar, I explored “Chemicals that Control Human Emotions.”

Over time, I have observed how the understanding, or misunderstanding, of emotions between spouses can make or break the peace in a home. In many cases, I saw how domestic tension, even violence against women, often stemmed from emotional misinterpretation.

This got me asking the question: "What if men knew more about the emotions of their wives?" I began researching how much men knew about the emotional cycles of women. I interviewed some married men and asked the question "Are you aware that your wife’s monthly cycle influences her emotions and behavior?" Over 98% had no idea. They were often shocked and remorseful. A common reaction was: “If I had known this earlier, I would have been more patient and supportive.”

This became my initial inspiration to build an app that gives husbands the insight to understand and support the emotional health of their wives. The next inspiration was their willingness to pay a token for monthly subscription (one responder promised to donate to the product), and the final inspiration is that the tools to easily build it was made available by Bolt's hackathon.

What it does

CycleWise gives husbands the insight to understand and support the emotional health of their wives. It uses the cycle start date to calculate the emotionally sensitive phase, and sends monthly alert and support tips, a day before it starts. I believe it can improve marriage relationships and help to build more peaceful homes.

How we built it

I interviewed 8 married men in an effort to validate the idea, and got them on the wait-list. Bolt.New was used to build all core functionalities till it was production-ready with: Payment processing (Paystack for Nigeria, Stripe for international) Supabase integration with payment status tracking Beautiful, responsive design Email collection and cycle data storage Thank you page with payment confirmation Support contact information

After building with Bolt.new, I also used the platform to deploy it to Netlify. It provided me a Netlify URL which I used to test the live site.

I used another prompt on Bolt.new to build an Android WebView app to make the web app easily accessible for Android users.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Buying Domain Name from Ionos: Using my debit card to purchase the CycleWise.org domain name from ionos was not going with Nigeria address. When it went through using Paypal, I was surprised that it reverted. I had to buy from my existing registrar.

  2. Configuring Domain Name I faced challenges setting up the custom domain to show the Netlify app. I had to login to Netlify to configure the domain name to point to the Netlify app URL.

  3. Connecting RevenueCat Paywall After days of trying, I didn't seem to get RevenueCat Paywall to work on the Android app. Even though I wanted to compete in the category sponsored by RevenueCat, I had to change the build strategy and relied on two different web based payment providers and used geo location to choose which to show to a customer based on their country.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The first a compliment that I proud of is that I was able to finish building the app and it is functioning as expected. The next accomplishment is that I was able to talk to potential users before building the app, and to get them on the wait-list, waiting and willing to pay. I also proud that I got my first paying subscriber.

What we learned

I have learnt about Bolt.new, an excellent platform that I will be using for a long time to come. I learned how to used it and practiced how to prompt it.

Stackblitz, RevenueCat, and Supabase were interesting platforms that I also learned about.

What's next for CycleWise

My next move for CycleWise is to keep onboarding initial users, till it achieves 100 paying users monthly. From there it would grow to the first 1,000 users, to first 10,000, to first 100,000 and hopefully to a million happy users. I also hope it would grow by referrals from friends, family, and marriage counselors.
