Inspiration

I wanted a personalized wellness app that could truly adapt to my changing needs — not just day to day, but across the different phases of my menstrual cycle. Most wellness apps overlook this biological rhythm, offering one-size-fits-all advice. That’s how CycleSyncAI was born - a generative AI-powered health app that understands female physiology and now, with Qloo’s Taste AI, cultural preferences too. This version of the app integrates behavioral, biological, and cultural context thereby creating a smarter, more intuitive wellness experience.

What it does

CycleSyncAI delivers personalized, cycle-aware diet and fitness plans along with a ready-to-use grocery list, to help women align their wellness routines with their body’s natural rhythms. It uses menstrual cycle data from Apple HealthKit, combined with user details (age, height, weight, dietary restrictions, medical conditions, fitness goals, and preferences), to generate expert-informed recommendations via Perplexity’s Sonar Pro API.

In addition, it leverages Qloo’s Taste AI to provide culturally aligned wellness suggestions that match the user’s taste and behavioral context.

Core features include:

  • Personalized, phase-specific diet and workout plans using LLMs - either for a particular day or a date range
  • Customized grocery lists aligned with daily meals for the selected range
  • Progress tracking and motivational messages
  • Diet and workout plans personalized based on tracker insights - tracking adherence helps inform future recommendations
  • Smart notifications for hydration, menstrual phase changes, and plan follow-ups
  • A “Curated For You” section powered by Qloo, offering cultural food and wellness suggestions tailored to user taste and behavior

How I built it

CycleSyncAI is a fully native iOS app, built using:

  • Swift + UIKit in Xcode
  • Apple HealthKit to access menstrual cycle data
  • Perplexity’s Sonar Pro API for generating meal and workout plans
  • Qloo’s Taste AI™ API to surface culturally-relevant suggestions in the Curated For You section
  • Local storage via UserDefaults for profile inputs and history
  • WKWebView for rendering HTML plans, and UserNotifications for reminders

I engineered structured prompts that combine biological phase, user preferences, and cultural cues, allowing the app to deliver deeply personalized experiences.

Challenges I ran into

Frontend development was completely new to me as a data scientist. My main coding experience is in Python, not Swift. I faced many challenges learning and polishing the iOS UI, including layout constraints, Xcode configuration, and ensuring a smooth experience across multiple screens. Learning front-end layout management, integrating WebViews, and handling HealthKit permissions were all new territories.

Another key challenge was designing structured prompts that consistently delivered meaningful, well-formatted outputs from both Sonar Pro and Qloo, especially for diverse user profiles with complex needs.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Successfully integrating Apple HealthKit, Perplexity, and Qloo into a seamless mobile experience
  • Building an end-to-end app that combines behavioral patterns, health data, and cultural preferences
  • Designing a working Taste AI integration that genuinely enhances user value by going beyond generic suggestions
  • Creating a tracker system and notification engine that improves adherence and user engagement

What I learned

I deepened my understanding of:

  • iOS development using Swift and UIKit
  • HealthKit integration and how to securely access and use biological signals
  • Prompt engineering for both health- and taste-aware LLM responses
  • Cultural personalization, and how Qloo’s Taste AI opens new doors in making apps more human-centric
  • Designing a personalized UX that adapts to user inputs and biological states

What's next for CycleSync AI

  • Adding a chatbot that lets users ask questions about their plans — e.g., recipe instructions for suggested meals, deeper explanations for specific workouts, or even personalized cultural suggestions powered by Qloo
  • Refining the Curated For You section to dynamically adapt based on tracker adherence and shifting user interests
  • Bringing the app to Android for broader accessibility
  • Exploring wearable integrations for real-time activity and health feedback
  • Adding multilingual support to reach a wider audience

Impact

CycleSyncAI empowers women to care for their health in a personalized, biologically and culturally intelligent way. By combining menstrual data with AI-driven insights and Qloo’s cultural engine, it supports:

  • Smarter food and fitness choices
  • Reduced decision fatigue
  • Positive body awareness
  • A more inclusive, taste-sensitive wellness journey

Ultimately, it bridges personal behavior and cultural understanding, making self-care more relevant, intuitive, and effective.
