Inspiration

While we are on the Internet on a daily basis, how many of us even care to think about our safety online? Phishing links, insecure passwords, malware, and online fraud are some of the topics many know of, yet at the same time cybersecurity is a hard topic to learn and not always interesting enough.

This is what we tried to change. The concept of CyberSpace came as an attempt to provide a platform for learning basics of cybersecurity through exploring and interacting with the 3D environment.

Functionality

CyberSpace

It is a 3D interactive cybersecurity learning application.

Users will have the chance to visit various parts of the CyberSpace environment. Each area of the CyberSpace environment highlights a particular cybersecurity concept, such as:

  • Password security
  • Phishing
  • Malware
  • Social engineering
  • Online safety

The aim is to make each cybersecurity concept a separate experience instead of having information about it on a standard web page.

Our objective is to help people understand the basics of cybersecurity in an easy way.

How we built it

CyberSpace is being developed as an immersive experience on the Web, utilizing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and 3D web technologies.

The focus of the project has been on the development of a futuristic cyber environment with interactive objects, animations, navigation, and information sections. In addition, we aimed at maintaining simplicity in order to prevent the 3D features from causing complications and difficulty in using the website.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges faced in this project has been the determination of how to design an impressive website while avoiding unnecessary complication.

3D websites tend to get heavy very fast, and therefore, we needed to pay attention to performance and the number of visual elements used. Navigation also needed to be made clear for the sake of the user's understanding of their location and interaction capabilities.

Moreover, one of the difficulties encountered included the presentation of cybersecurity topics in an understandable manner for beginners.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we managed to transform an initial idea of a cybersecurity training website into a three-dimensional interactive experience.

We particularly like the concept of assigning separate areas for various cybersecurity-related subjects to make learning feel like exploring.

In the end, CyberSpace has enabled us to merge web development, 3D design, and cybersecurity training into one project.

What we learned

Working on CyberSpace, we have come to understand that creating a well-functioning 3D website goes far beyond 3D models and animation.

We have discovered three-dimensional web development, UX, performance optimization, animations, and interactive design. At the same time, we have understood the importance of considering the user in the process of experience design.

What is more, we have learned that a simple interaction might prove more beneficial than complex features.

Where is CyberSpace headed

This is only the beginning for CyberSpace.

For the future, we hope to include interactive cybersecurity challenges, quizzes, games, progress measurement, additional cyber environments, and practical situations.

We also aim to make the experience more personalized, where users can select their own learning path and move through from basic concepts to more advanced cybersecurity topics.

The end goal would be to transform CyberSpace into an engaging way to learn about being safe online.
