Inspiration

Cyber scams are becoming increasingly common, especially through SMS, WhatsApp messages, emails, suspicious links, QR codes, and fake payment requests. Many people receive these messages but are unsure whether they are safe or fraudulent.

We wanted to build a simple mobile application that could help everyday users identify suspicious digital content, understand why it is risky, and learn how to stay safe.

This idea led us to create CyberShield AI, a personal cybersecurity companion that combines scam detection, security awareness, and interactive learning in one Android application.

What it does

CyberShield AI helps users detect and understand common cybersecurity threats through multiple tools:

🔗 URL Security Scanner – analyzes suspicious links and provides a risk score. 📱 Scam SMS Detector – identifies common SMS scam patterns such as OTP requests, fake bank alerts, UPI scams, and fraudulent offers. 💬 WhatsApp Scam Detector – analyzes suspicious WhatsApp messages. 📧 Email Phishing Detector – detects phishing indicators, suspicious links, urgent requests, and information-stealing attempts. 📷 QR Code Scanner – helps users identify potential risks associated with unknown QR codes. 🤖 CyberShield AI Assistant – provides cybersecurity guidance and analyzes suspicious content using local security logic. 🧠 Cyber Quiz + XP – helps users improve their cybersecurity knowledge through interactive questions. 📊 Security Score – provides a personalized security-awareness score based on user activity. 💡 Daily Cyber Tips – provides practical cybersecurity advice every day. 📚 Cyber Safety Awareness – teaches users about phishing, OTP safety, UPI scams, fake jobs, passwords, malware, and other threats. 🗂️ Scan History – stores previous security scan results locally for easy reference.

Our goal is not only to detect threats, but also to educate users about the warning signs behind them.

How we built it

CyberShield AI was developed as an Android application using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.

We used:

Kotlin for application development Jetpack Compose for the modern Android UI Firebase Authentication for login and signup Room Database for local scan history and quiz data DataStore for persistent user preferences and XP Android Camera/QR technologies for QR scanning A rule-based security analysis engine for identifying common scam and phishing patterns

The application follows a modular structure so that scanners, navigation, database operations, and UI components can work together without affecting the existing functionality.

We also focused on creating a consistent dark navy and neon-blue cybersecurity interface that is easy to navigate and suitable for everyday users.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was combining multiple cybersecurity features into a single mobile application while keeping the interface simple.

We faced challenges with:

Integrating multiple scanner features Managing navigation between many Jetpack Compose screens Connecting Firebase Authentication Maintaining scan history using Room Database Making analysis results appear immediately after pressing the Analyze button Persisting quiz XP between app sessions Handling camera permissions for QR scanning Creating an AI-style assistant without depending on a paid external AI API Keeping the UI responsive across different screen sizes

We solved these challenges by breaking the application into reusable components and using a local rule-based security analysis system for the core detection features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have developed a complete Android cybersecurity application that brings multiple security tools together in one platform.

Our major accomplishments include:

Building multiple functional scam detection tools Creating a persistent scan history system Implementing Firebase-based authentication Developing a cybersecurity quiz with XP progression Creating a personalized security score Adding daily cybersecurity awareness tips Building a local CyberShield AI security assistant Creating a dedicated cybersecurity awareness section Designing a consistent dark cybersecurity-themed interface Successfully building and testing the application as an Android APK

Most importantly, we are proud that CyberShield AI focuses on both detection and education, helping users understand cyber threats instead of simply labeling content as dangerous.

What we learned

During development, we learned how to build a complete Android application using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose while integrating Firebase, Room Database, DataStore, camera functionality, navigation, and reusable UI components.

We also learned that cybersecurity applications need to communicate risks clearly. A detection result is much more useful when the user understands what the warning signs are and what action they should take next.

The project also helped us understand the importance of designing security tools for normal users rather than only for technical professionals.

What's next for CyberShield AI

We plan to continue improving CyberShield AI with more advanced cybersecurity capabilities.

Future improvements include:

AI-powered threat detection Real-time phishing URL intelligence Voice and call scam detection Advanced QR and payment fraud detection Deepfake and voice-clone detection Multilingual support, including Tamil Real-time threat intelligence Automated scam reporting More personalized cybersecurity recommendations Cloud-based security analysis Enterprise and financial-sector integrations

Our long-term vision is to make CyberShield AI a personal cybersecurity companion that helps people detect, understand, and avoid digital threats before they become victims.
