My Cybersecurity Project for Seniors: Empowering the Elderly to Stay Safe Online
What Inspired Me
Watching my grandparents nearly fall for a phishing scam was a wake-up call. They’re Chinese and struggle with technology, and their language barrier made online safety even harder. I realized many seniors face similar challenges and lack the tools to protect themselves online. This project was born from my desire to help them feel confident and secure in the digital world.
What I Learned
Creating this website taught me the power of empathy in design. I had to simplify complex cybersecurity concepts and ensure the platform was accessible to users with varying levels of tech experience. I learned to make user-friendly decisions and communicate effectively, which was crucial for an audience that might also face language barriers.
How I Built My Project
I used Flask (Python) for the back end, handling everything from routing to session management. The front end features Bootstrap for a responsive, senior-friendly layout and custom CSS for readability, including large fonts and high-contrast colors.
Chatbase was integrated to provide real-time assistance, a feature that’s invaluable for users who might need extra help. Interactive JavaScript quizzes make learning about cybersecurity engaging and memorable. The entire project is deployed via Render, linked to GitHub for easy updates, and managed with a Procfile to ensure smooth operation.
