Inspiration

Cybercrime awareness is often either too technical for everyday people or too generic to lead to action. We wanted to create a calmer learning space where a student, volunteer, educator, or small organisation can understand a cyber risk, practise a safe response, and know when to escalate.

What it does

CyberSafe Defender Studio is an offline-friendly global cyber-safety learning app. It combines guided cybersecurity modules with fictional phishing and response simulations, safety checklists, risk triage, incident-note drafting, an awareness-report workspace, and a source library. Progress stays on the device - there is no account requirement or cloud sync.

How we built it

The project is a static, local-first PWA built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It uses browser local storage for learning progress, a service worker for offline use, and interactive client-side modules for simulations and planning tools. Codex and GPT-5.6 supported the conversion from an inherited institution-specific manual into a global public-awareness product: content audit, safe rebrand, neutral network animation, original browser-generated ambient audio, PWA cleanup, test checks, and submission documentation.

Challenges we ran into

The major challenge was preserving useful cybersecurity learning depth while removing all institution-specific framing and keeping the project safe for a broad audience. We also had to make the offline/PWA setup work after removing old identity assets and source documents, while ensuring the technical content is clearly limited to authorised defensive learning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Reframed a deep cybersecurity learning library for a general public audience.
  • Added explicit safety boundaries across the product.
  • Preserved local-first progress and offline-friendly learning.
  • Built practical tools for response planning, checklists, triage, and factual awareness notes.
  • Removed inherited institutional logos, names, and materials from the public package.

What we learned

We learned that cyber-safety education is most helpful when it connects knowledge to a calm, practical next step. We also learned that safety boundaries matter as much as technical accuracy: learners need clear limits around permission, real evidence, sensitive data, and reporting. Local-first design makes this kind of learning more accessible in low-connectivity settings while keeping personal learning progress private.

What's next for CyberSafe Defender Studio

We plan to add more multilingual learning paths, a guided “what should I do now?” incident checklist, accessibility refinements, region-specific official reporting links, and more age-appropriate scam-awareness simulations. Future additions will remain defensive, privacy-conscious, and strictly fictional.
