Inspiration
As computer science students, we've often encountered individuals struggling with basic internet safety, a skill we believe should be nurtured from a young age. To address this, we designed "CyberSafe" to educate children on safe online practices through interactive gameplay, ensuring these crucial lessons are both accessible and engaging.
What it does
"CyberSafe" stars OScar, a friendly computer mascot navigating the digital world. Players assist OScar in completing online tasks safely by choosing the correct options and solving mini-games. Each decision affects OScar's success, teaching players about the consequences of their online actions in a fun and interactive manner.
How we built it
Our three-member team divided the project into assets creation, UI design, and game mechanics development using Unity. We adopted an incremental development approach, focusing initially on basic functionality before moving on to refine the game's logic and flow, learning to utilize Unity's features effectively along the way.
Challenges we ran into
Our greatest challenge was our inexperience with Unity, which led to ambitious goals and a steep learning curve. Our initial game version was not as engaging as we hoped, prompting us to reevaluate and improve the gameplay. Despite sleep deprivation and initial setbacks, we persevered, refining our game into something we're proud to present.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Mastering Unity's UI system was a significant milestone for us. However, the transformation of our initial concept into a polished, enjoyable game stands out as our proudest achievement. We managed to turn a clunky prototype into "CyberSafe," a game that educates while entertaining.
What we learned
Beyond acquiring a foundational understanding of Unity, our project taught us the importance of effective planning and strategy in game development, especially under tight deadlines. This experience highlighted the value of adaptability and clear goal-setting in bringing a concept to fruition.
What's next for CyberSafe: Adventures with OScar
While "CyberSafe" currently serves as a proof of concept and a testament to our growth as developers, we're open to expanding the game further, especially if educators or program organizers express interest. Our hope is that "CyberSafe" can become a tool for teaching internet safety to children, making the digital world a safer place for the next generation.
