Inspiration

We saw how many small and mid-sized businesses struggle with getting started in cybersecurity. The CIS Controls are a powerful framework—but too complex for most non-experts. We wanted to create something simple, actionable, and accessible to help any business become cyber ready without needing a dedicated security team.

What it does

CyberReady is a web-based platform that guides businesses through the CIS Controls step by step. It helps assess current security posture, prioritize high-impact actions, assign tasks, track progress, and monitor improvements—all through an intuitive dashboard. It also includes educational resources, alerts for critical gaps, and tailored recommendations.

How we built it

CyberReady was built using Vercel’s AI bot, powered by OpenAI’s large language models and NVIDIA’s AI acceleration technologies. We used these tools to rapidly generate, refine, and organize the core logic behind the app—especially in breaking down the CIS Controls into digestible steps. The platform was deployed on Vercel for fast, scalable hosting, with AI-powered features supporting user guidance, task generation, and plain-language translations of technical safeguards.

Challenges we ran into

Translating technical CIS Control language into plain, actionable steps was a major challenge. We also had to strike a balance between simplicity and flexibility—enough guidance for beginners but customizable for advanced users. Ensuring scalability and clear task assignments for teams took extra iteration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a working prototype that takes a dense framework and turns it into a user-friendly experience. Our guided onboarding flow, progress tracker, and real-time status dashboard received positive feedback during testing.

What we learned

We learned how important UX is when dealing with complex technical topics. We also gained a deeper understanding of the CIS Controls and how they apply to different types of businesses. Most importantly, we saw the value of bridging the gap between cybersecurity frameworks and practical implementation.

What's next for CyberReady

Next, we plan to integrate actionable tool recommendations—both open source and commercial—mapped directly to each CIS Control. These recommendations will include pricing, features, and step-by-step guides to help businesses evaluate and implement the right solutions faster. Our goal is to turn CyberReady into not just a planning tool, but a launchpad for real-world cybersecurity improvement.
