Inspiration

In today's digital world, staying safe online is more important than ever, especially for seniors who may not be as familiar with modern technology. We were inspired to create Cyber Genie to bridge this knowledge gap and empower elderly individuals with the tools and confidence to navigate the internet securely. By presenting cybersecurity concepts in an easy-to-understand and engaging format, we aim to reduce their vulnerability to cybercrime.

What it does

Cyber Genie provides an accessible and user-friendly platform for seniors to learn about cybersecurity. The app uses multiple-choice questions divided into easy, medium, and hard levels, allowing users to test and enhance their knowledge at their own pace. Topics include recognizing phishing emails, creating strong passwords, and understanding basic online privacy. Each question comes with helpful explanations, so users not only answer but also learn and retain valuable information.

How we built it

We developed Cyber Genie using React for the front end, ensuring a clean and intuitive user interface. The back end, built with Node.js, powers the quiz system and manages user progress. The app's questions and explanations are carefully crafted to be clear, concise, and accessible to seniors, with input from cybersecurity experts. We prioritized simplicity in the design to ensure the app is welcoming and non-intimidating for our target audience.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was designing the interface to meet the specific needs of elderly users. We had to balance simplicity with functionality, ensuring the app was easy to navigate without sacrificing features. Another hurdle was creating questions that effectively conveyed critical cybersecurity concepts while remaining straightforward and relatable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of developing an app that directly addresses a critical need in our community. Cyber Genie not only makes learning about cybersecurity approachable but also builds confidence among seniors in using digital technology. The thoughtful design and engaging content are a testament to our dedication to making a meaningful impact.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained a deeper understanding of designing for accessibility and tailoring content to a specific audience. We also improved our skills in building user-centric apps and learned how to present complex information in a way that is both engaging and easy to grasp. Finally, we accumulated a vast well of knowledge regarding cybersecurity thanks to the researching and question-making process.

What's next for Cyber Genie

We plan to expand Cyber Genie by adding new question sets, interactive tutorials, and video content. Additionally, we aim to integrate a progress tracker to motivate users and provide insights into their learning journey. This can be done by allowing a login system where elders can personalized their learning process and provide feedback for further polishing of the app. Finally, accessibility features can be integrated to improve seniors experience.
