Inspiration

AI scams are becoming more convincing every day, from deepfake phone calls to phishing links that look real. We were inspired by the need to protect vulnerable groups like kids and seniors/parents , who are often targeted and left feeling frustrated or vulnerable.

What it does

Cyber Compass is a mobile app that:

  • Provides Scam Simulation Learning, where users practice spotting scams through safe, interactive scenarios.
  • Delivers Security Briefings, simple and up-to-date insights on the latest threats and how to avoid them.

How we built it

  • Specs & user stories first: We began with Kiro to generate user stories and a living spec that defined the scope.
  • Spec-to-code: Kiro auto-generated tasks such as creating the simulation route, updating navigation, and simplifying layouts.
  • Vibe coding: Quick, conversational coding sessions with Kiro scaffolded React Native (Expo) + Gluestack UI components.
  • Hooks: Automated repetitive workflows like running tests, syncing layouts, and updating spec progress.
  • TDD: Following rules from our steering file, Kiro generated complete test cases to ensure reliability.
  • Tech stack: React Native (Expo), TypeScript, Gluestack UI, Kiro (specs + hooks), GitHub, AsyncStorage/SecureStore.

Challenges we ran into

  • Structuring specs and user stories clearly enough for Kiro to generate precise tasks.
  • Designing an interface that’s simple for elderly users while still modern.
  • Managing scope within hackathon time limits.
  • Balancing reliance on Kiro’s automation with guiding it to align with our vision.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a production-ready app in record time through spec-driven development.
  • Creating a UI that’s both accessible and modern.
  • Seamlessly using Kiro hooks and TDD to automate testing and progress tracking.
  • Delivering an app with real-world impact for vulnerable populations.

What we learned

  • How spec-driven development keeps scope, tasks, and code in sync.
  • The power of hooks to eliminate repetitive work and keep projects consistent.
  • How vibe coding accelerates prototyping with immediate results.
  • The importance of user-first design in building trust and accessibility.

What's next for Cyber Compass

  • Expand simulation scenarios to cover new scam types like AI chatbots and deepfake videos.
  • Integrate real-time scam intelligence feeds for richer briefings.
  • Add progress tracking and gamification to make learning engaging.
  • Explore partnerships with schools, senior centers, and community groups to distribute the app.
