Inspiration

The main thing that inspired our team was the experience aspect of the project. We all want to expand our horizons so we did just that. Staying in your comfort zone is dangerous so we thought we would all do something we weren't comfortable with, and the outcome was worth it.

What it does

Our android app basically logs a user into the main screen where they can choose options. Among these options is a survey that questions the user with day-to-day security maintenance. We collect their responses and determine their security score. Upon receiving their score, they are told what their major security flaws are. On the main page, they can access resources to help with those flaws and share/contact us or exit the app.

How we built it

We built the app with 4 things in mind: the UI, cyber security research, the survey, and the back-end activities. We started by downloading and designing the main aspects of our project on android XD, then we all got situated with GITHUB and a base app with nothing on it. Once we could all do our sections we split into 4 parts. Vincent focused on the front/back end using Java & XML to make the log-in page and home page. He also worked on making all the buttons and activities linked and functional. Luis focused on the survey, coming up with innovative questions and strategic placement for them to maximize security determination. Edwin came up with a way to score a user based on vulnerabilities and completely renovated the app at the end. He also used sharedpreferences to have a saved state. Esme was in charge of 4 activity's back/front end, plus overlooked the entire hackathon (deadlines) and picked up anyone's slack and debugging issues. Currently looking into launching this app in the play store.

Challenges we ran into

  • The biggest challenge we had was getting GitHub to work on all of our machines. In the end, it was different versions of SDK's and JDK's that was messing us up.
  • The second biggest challenge was life. Edwin got sick and a flat tire during this hackathon, Esme and vincent worked, Luis had two finals and got his booster which made him sick for 2 days. Despite all this, we were able to finish our parts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Our greatest accomplishment was finishing. We came for the learning experience but ended up actually developing a functional app that could potentially become a larger project for all of us.
  • Luis and vincent accomplished making their very first app ever and finishing their very first hackathon!
  • Esme and Edwin accomplished finishing their second hackathon ever.

What we learned

  • Working as a team is hard but doable.
  • Good ideas come to you when you're under pressure.
  • We can do anything!!

What's next for Cyber Chasers

  • The Cyber Chasers need to find their true passion and potentially get good software/ android development jobs one day.
  • We also probably will spend more time on this app next year to further enhance our app development abilities.
  • We're gonna do more hackathons!!!!!!!!!!
