Canvas Wrapped

A Spotify Wrapped–style recap of your semester, built for ShellHacks 2026

Inspiration

Spotify Wrapped turns a year of ignored data into something people love sharing. Canvas has just as much data about every student—grades, courses, submission timing—and never shows it back in a way that's fun. We built that mirror.

What it does

A Chrome/Firefox extension that turns your Canvas activity into a personalized, slide-by-slide recap—grades, courses, and how you actually submit work. A "What's Next" button copies a ready-made prompt built from your own data, so you can paste it into any AI assistant for personalized recommendations, on your terms.

How we built it

WXT, React, TypeScript, Tailwind, and pnpm, targeting Chrome and Firefox from one codebase. Rather than building OAuth against Canvas (which needs institutional approval), the extension reads the Canvas API through the student's own logged-in session cookie. We probed dozens of real endpoints across real courses first and found two fully reliable calls to build the whole data layer around, instead of looping unreliable per-course endpoints.

Challenges we ran into

Canvas API access varies per-course by design—instructors can disable specific tabs, so the same endpoint succeeds on one course and 403s on another. We also cut a planned webpage with AI recommendations and a friend leaderboard once we mapped out the FERPA implications of a real backend touching student data, and pulled a leftover internal debug tool before submission once we realized it exposed far more than Wrapped itself needed.

What's next

Generalizing beyond one Canvas domain, and revisiting server-assisted AI recommendations if we can do it without losing the privacy guarantees the clipboard-copy approach gives us today.
