Accomplishments that we're proud of# Project Story: Reconnecting Memory Through Experience

Inspiration

Our project was inspired by the emotional reality of individuals living with Dementia and memory loss.
We were moved by the idea that people are not just losing memories—they are losing connection to who they are and the people they love.

We asked ourselves:
What if memories didn’t have to stay static?

What if a simple photo could become an experience that helps someone reconnect—not just remember?

This led us to design a system focused on restoring identity, emotional connection, and comfort.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we explored how memory works, especially in individuals with Dementia.
We learned that recall is not just about information—it’s about emotion, context, and familiarity.

We also learned that:

  • Static images are often not enough to trigger meaningful recall
  • Emotional safety is more important than factual correction
  • Caregivers play a critical role in memory support

We used these insights to design an experience that is calm, guided, and human-centered.

How We Built It

Our platform transforms meaningful photos into immersive memory experiences using AI.

Core System Flow:

  1. A caregiver or authorized family member uploads and validates a photo
  2. The system generates a short video that recreates the moment
  3. AI narration explains the relationships and context within the memory
  4. A conversational agent gently guides the user through the experience

We also implemented key safeguards:

  • Family-in-the-loop validation ensures accuracy
  • Positive-only outputs maintain emotional safety
  • Memories are generated in batches to avoid overwhelming users

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was balancing innovation with emotional responsibility.

We had to think carefully about:

  • How to prevent confusion or misinformation
  • How to ensure the experience remains calming and not overwhelming
  • How to design AI that feels human, not robotic

Another challenge was simplifying a complex system into something that could be demonstrated clearly within a hackathon timeframe.

Despite these challenges, we focused on building a meaningful and responsible experience.

Impact

Our goal is to help people reconnect with their identity, their loved ones, and their life experiences.

For individuals with memory loss, this means feeling less lost.
For families, it means moments of recognition and connection.

Because at the end of the day:

Your heart can remember what your mind can’t hold on to.
