Inspiration

Our inspiration for the In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) Redesign project came from a commitment to enhance the passenger experience during air travel. We were driven by the potential to make long flights more enjoyable and engaging through a thoughtful and user-centric redesign of the IFE screen.

What it does

The IFE Redesign project aims to transform the in-flight entertainment experience with the following improvements:

  • User-Centered Design: We have created a more intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it easier for passengers to access and enjoy entertainment options during their flight.
  • Enhanced Content Discovery: Our redesigned IFE screen offers an improved content recommendation system, enabling passengers to discover relevant movies, shows, and other entertainment quickly.
  • Seamless Navigation: Passengers can now effortlessly browse through available content, access saved playlists, and search for their preferred entertainment options with a redesigned and efficient navigation system.
  • Improved Accessibility: We have incorporated accessibility features to cater to passengers with diverse needs, ensuring everyone can enjoy the IFE screen.

How we built it

Research and Ideation

  • Research: We conducted secondary and primary research to understand users pain points, preferences, and expectations when using in-flight entertainment systems.

  • Sketches: We began with pen-and-paper sketches to explore initial design ideas. These sketches helped us brainstorm layout, structure, and content placement.

Design Phase

  • Low-Fidelity Wireframes: We created low-fidelity wireframes to translate our sketches into digital form. These wireframes served as a blueprint for the user interface, outlining the placement of elements and navigation flow.

Iterative Prototyping

-High-Fidelity Prototyping: We transitioned from low-fidelity wireframes to high-fidelity prototypes. These prototypes were based on our research insights and translated into digital form to create a visually detailed representation of the interface.

Challenges we ran into

While redesigning the IFE screen, we encountered several challenges, including:

  • Hardware Limitations: Adapting the interface to work seamlessly across different in-flight entertainment hardware and screen sizes was a technical challenge.
  • Content Integration: Ensuring that the new design is compatible with various content management systems and can deliver a consistent user experience.
  • Time Constraints: Limited time to conduct more primary research, such as surveys.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Throughout the IFE Redesign project, we achieved several accomplishments we're proud of:

  • Developing a user-centered and visually appealing redesign that significantly improves the passenger's interaction with the IFE screen.
  • Crafting an accessible and intuitive interface that caters to passengers with varying needs.

What we learned

The IFE Redesign project provided valuable insights into the intricacies of UI/UX design in the airline industry. We learned the importance of adaptability, accessibility, and the need for continuous innovation in delivering an enjoyable in-flight entertainment experience.

What's next for the IFE Redesign

Competitive Analysis

  • In-Depth Evaluation: We will conduct a comprehensive competitive analysis, scrutinizing existing in-flight entertainment systems across various airlines. This analysis will help us identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for further improvement in our design.

  • Benchmarking: By benchmarking our redesigned IFE screen against competitors, we aim to ensure that our solution remains at the forefront of passenger expectations and industry standards.

Usability Testing

  • User-Centric Validation: We will continue to prioritize user feedback by conducting usability tests with real passengers. This ongoing user testing will provide insights into how passengers interact with the redesigned IFE screen and identify areas for further refinement.

  • Accessibility Assessment: As part of usability testing, we will also focus on assessing the accessibility features to ensure that passengers with diverse needs can fully benefit from the redesign.
