Inspiration
We decided to stick to the theme of the Hackathon and focus on the importance of wearing masks and staying at home. We used a replica of Cutie Hack's mascot and made him our protagonist.
What it does
Norm the Navel goes around collecting masks while dodging the deadly coronavirus. He must collect as many as he can before the timer runs out.
How we built it
We used the Scratch platform to build our game. We incrementally built it using coding blocks. The Sprites were a mixture of hand drawn and sourced from the internet.
Challenges we ran into
Since none of us are experienced coders, we had bugs that took a little while to fix. One recurring issue was that the sprites wouldn’t interact properly after making minor adjustments. Additionally, the main character sprite would not interact with the masks properly for a while. Also, right when we were about to film the demo, the game froze and stopped working.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to make a working game on our first try. Not only that, but we were also able to incorporate COVID-19 as a theme to serve as a fun reminder to stay safe during this time.
What we learned
We learned how to use Scratch and troubleshoot/debug virtually. Additionally, we figured out how to delegate tasks to work efficiently and complete the project.
What's next for Cuties Don't Get Cooties
We're going to add more levels to the game with more enemies, such as large crowds of people spreading COVID-19!
