Inspiration and Game Core
The game is inspired by a tender and empathetic connection with nature, highlighting the player’s role as an active character in a story where personal growth is achieved through helping others.
Beyond entertainment, our game also carries an educational purpose: it invites players to explore each animal’s biome, learn about their diets, and understand the factors necessary for their well-being.
The game is designed as a long core loop where players gradually progress toward an ending — with healing animals at the heart and soul of the experience. The grandmother character guides the player, assigning missions that drive progression and acting as an in-story tutorial. Through the beeper, players can check their status, unlocked items, location in the world, and next mission.
Challenges
The animals’ animation was key to making them feel charming and the interactions satisfying. Balancing them while keeping the game’s spirit intact was a major challenge successfully met. Creating a dynamic custom UI was another: the beeper, inventory for collected resources, crafting table, shop, and mini map that works as a compass were all important achievements.
Accomplishments
We created a beautiful and fun game without relying on frantic rhythms or empty content. Its slower pace invites players into a cozy vibe, an explorative mindset, and a genuine connection with animals. We also learned that it’s possible to build games with a meaningful level of complexity within Horizon.
What’s next for Cute Animal Rescue
The game’s core loop is long, solid, and highly expandable — we're aiming to add new biomes, animals, ailments to cure, and activities in the entrance neighborhood. We’d also love to have new items to the shop, see fantastical avatars running through the world, and host events, seasonal content, and community activities that keep the experience evolving.
