About the project

Simple Personal Financial × Budget Manager is a responsive web app that empowers users to take control of their money through a unified dashboard. It brings together transaction tracking, goal planning, recurring-bill management and data-driven insights in one sleek interface.

Inspiration

Why a financial/budget management tool? Well, the reason or inspiration is pretty simple: I was looking for one myself. I know there are plenty of open-source and free apps or platforms out there, but from my point of view, most of them don't have the kind of visuals I’m looking for. I wanted something more modern, clean, and with a customizable dashboard—so I figured, why not build it myself?

What it does

  • At-a-glance overview of total balance, income vs. expenses and net cash flow for the month
  • Transaction feed with categories (Food & Dining, Transportation, Entertainment, etc.) and the ability to drill into any line item
  • Financial calendar that plots income, expenses, goals and upcoming bills on a month/week/day view for effortless planning
  • Cash-flow analysis showing average daily ins and outs, savings rate and a real-time “health meter” so you always know if you’re on track
  • Goal tracker (emergency fund, vacation, new laptop) with progress bars and deadlines to keep you motivated
  • Recurring-bill reminders so that rent, utilities or subscriptions never slip through the cracks
  • Dynamic charts for spending vs. savings trends, category breakdowns and income sources that update as you transact
  • Daily finance tip to build better habits—because small changes compound over time

How we built it

  • I built the entire platform using Bolt.new.. I also used a few other AI tools to help me structure the prompts and figure out how they should be formatted.

  • But yes, all the code was written directly within Bolt.new..

Challenges we ran into

  • Ensure consistent and appropriate colors in both light and dark modes, including hover states
  • Adjust the widget sizing for better proportions and responsiveness
  • Fix the line chart so it functions correctly and displays data as intended

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

  • A good-looking, responsive dashboard that gives users meaningful feedback quickly
  • Calendar integration that visually unites budgeting and time-based planning
  • Chart and card components powering every section—from “Recent Activity” to “Financial Health”
  • A modular architecture that makes adding new activity (loans, investments) straightforward

What we learned

Using Bolt.new and discovering how powerful the tool is, as well as experiencing the entire app-building process, has been incredible. As someone who knew virtually nothing in this area, being able to create such a complete website is really cool, and the experience has been amazing.

What’s next for Simple Personal Financial × Budget Manager

  • Advanced insights: predictive budgeting, automated savings “round-ups” and AI-powered advice
  • Export & share: CSV/PDF reports and “share a snapshot” for social-media bragging (or accountability)
