🖱️ Cursocalypse
The Reddit cursor that loses its mind so you don’t have to.
🎯 Inspiration
It all began with a bizarre obsession I’ve had for years: non-default cursors.
(Yes, I proudly admit—my Windows 11 setup hasn’t seen a stock pointer in ages.)
I always wondered:
What if the cursor wasn’t just a UI tool—but the main character of an interactive chaos simulator?
When the Useless Sh!t Challenge rolled around, I knew this was my moment. I started building a tiny app where the cursor could:
- Change colors and shape,
- Drip, spin, jiggle, and occasionally scream (visually, at least).
Then came the twist—Reddit’s Developer Platform + Bolt, with the added dare:
“Turn it into a game… inside a Reddit post.”
And so, Cursocalypse was born.
🧠 What I Built
Using Reddit’s new embedded app framework and Bolt, I crafted a playable mini-game entirely within a Reddit post. Here's how it works:
- The cursor is your controller—no clicks, no keys. Just movement.
- It morphs in real-time: changing shape, leaking trails, shrinking, or transforming into various items.
- You dodge hazards like vortex or rogue mod warnings that delete part of your sanity.
The entire game is built around:
- React-like stateful logic
- Canvas-based rendering
- Cursor tracking hooks via pointer events
- All logic encapsulated inside Reddit Bolt constraints
🧪 What I Learned
- Bolt’s framework is surprisingly powerful for unconventional UI behavior.
- Structured absurdity creates surprisingly strong engagement.
- Creating a cursor-led interface redefines interactivity when you're forced to ditch traditional inputs.
✅ Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of
- Successfully managing multiple cursor states with chaotic transformations.
- Implementing vortex pulling logic that distorts cursor movement and timing—without breaking the flow.
- Designing a totally buttonless, cursor-only control scheme.
- Creating a working, absurd game inside a Reddit post that stays true to the useless brief.
🚀 What's Next for Cursocalypse - Reddit Cursor Chaos!
- Develop a global leaderboard to let Redditors compete for most chaos survived.
- Add social sharing for cursed cursor GIFs.
- Open up "Cursor Skins" powered by user comments or karma thresholds.
