Inspiration
The credit for the idea goes to my girlfriend who is a kindergarten teacher. The goal was to find an education idea that does not involve replacing teachers.
What it does
She came up with the idea for an app that would help her track where her students are at compared to where they are expected to be and help her develop individualized lesson plans for each student.
How we built it
The entire thing was programmed using an open weight model, running on local hardware. It was done with Qwen3.8-27B, running on a single Nvidia Tesla V100 card inside of my home desktop system. I used remote desktop to connect, and I did not manually write a single line of code.
Challenges we ran into
Not a whole lot really. Just the usual things surrounding coding with a local model such as having a smaller context budget. My V100 can fit the model plus ~200k context. Compaction takes a good amount of time every few coding segments, but overall, it was a super useable solution. Other than that, I am not experienced in web development, or database frameworks, or really anything used in this project so I'm really treating this more as a learning experience more than anything.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of the local AI workflow I have been able to set up, and how well it has performed in this first real-world test for me. I had to design and 3d print a custom cooling shroud to mount a fan externally on my case and had to set up a custom app to configure which model I want to run on each GPU in my system.
What we learned
I think the biggest thing I have learned is how much I still need to learn. I have some amount of game dev experience, but programming is such a wide spectrum, and I had no experience with both front and backend web development, git or any version control, nor database frameworks. I ultimately did very little actual programming for this project, but it has been a good exposure to all of these topics from a high level.
What's next for Curriculum Planning Assistant
I will have my girlfriend be the ultimate decider as to whether or not I continue working on this. Our conversation about the idea was kind of vague, so we'll see how well I understood what she was talking about when I show it to her.
