Inspiration
Watching my mom fall for a fake investment scam made me realize how vulnerable our aging loved ones are to fraud. I wanted to build something tangible— a tool that’s easy to use, trustworthy, and tailored to the unique needs of adults 55+, who deserve clear, no-nonsense protection against scammers targeting their savings and identity.
What it does
Senior Safety Guard is a web platform that delivers critical scam alerts, lets users verify suspicious calls/websites/investments, offers interactive anti-fraud education, and provides one-click emergency support to notify family and guide police reporting—all designed with readability and simplicity at its core.
How we built it
We started with user-centric design (Figma) to map out intuitive navigation and high-contrast visuals. Using HTML/CSS/JavaScript (with React/Bootstrap) we built responsive pages, prioritizing minimum font sizes (18px+) and smooth scrolling for the elderly. We focused on clear labeling and large, easy-to-click buttons for accessibility.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing simplicity with functionality—we had to cut complex features to keep the interface intuitive, while ensuring all critical fraud protection tools remained. Adapting the layout for both desktop and mobile (without losing readability) also required rigorous testing across devices.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a platform that’s truly accessible: high contrast colors, large fonts, and straightforward navigation that our test group (local seniors 55+) found easy to use. The one-click emergency button and clear scam alert system received overwhelming positive feedback for its life-saving potential.
What we learned
We learned that designing for older adults means listening first—their needs (readability, simplicity, trust) are non-negotiable. We also mastered responsive design principles and accessibility best practices that make digital tools inclusive for all users, not just our target audience.
What's next for this project
We plan to expand the education modules with more scenario-based training (e.g., fake government call simulations) and partner with local senior centers to test and refine the tool further. We also aim to add regional scam alert updates tailored to local fraud trends across different states/countries.
