Inspiration
Electricity powers everything we do, yet for most people, it remains invisible. Every month, millions receive an electricity bill filled with unfamiliar charges, confusing units, and unexplained price changes. This gap creates an energy literacy crisis because people can’t manage what they don’t understand. We built CurrenSee because the energy transition won’t succeed unless everyday consumers are empowered to participate, not just experts. Energy should feel understandable, personal, and actionable.
What it does
CurrenSee is an AI-powered platform that makes energy simple. It helps users:
- Upload or photograph an electricity bill and receive clear, human explanations of what drove the cost
- Understand changes in usage, pricing, and household energy behavior
- Learn energy concepts through structured Academy modules, quizzes, and certifications
- Chat with Wattson, an AI Energy Buddy, for personalized questions and guidance
CurrenSee turns confusing bills into learning moments - and learning into smarter energy decisions.
How we built it
We developed CurrenSee using Google AI Studio powered by Gemini 3 Flash Preview, making Gemini the core engine behind the entire user experience. Gemini’s multimodal and reasoning capabilities allow CurrenSee to go beyond static bill tracking and become an intelligent energy literacy companion.
Gemini is central to CurrenSee through:
- Multimodal bill understanding, where users upload or photograph an electricity bill and Gemini extracts key fields like usage, charges, billing period, and currency
- Reasoning-driven explanations, where Gemini doesn’t just summarize numbers but explains why costs may have changed, connecting patterns to real household behavior and energy drivers
- Adaptive outputs, where explanations adjust based on the bill provided, the user’s country, and the correct local currency context
- Wattson, the AI Energy Buddy, powered by Gemini to provide conversational support and answer energy questions in plain language
- CurrenSee Academy generation, where Gemini helps deliver structured learning modules, intermediate certification quizzes, and knowledge checks to build long-term energy literacy
The result is a functional, deployable prototype where Gemini is not an add-on, but the foundation that makes energy understandable, personal, and actionable.
Challenges we ran into
Building an energy education product came with unique challenges:
- Utility bills vary widely across countries, formats, and currencies
- Early AI outputs tended to summarize instead of truly explain “why” costs changed
- Ensuring the platform felt trustworthy required adding safeguards, disclaimers, and adaptive responses
- Designing learning modules that were deep, structured, and engaging - not just basic tips
Each challenge pushed CurrenSee closer to being a real-world solution.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a professional, working prototype with bill explanation, literacy modules, and an AI tutor
- Designing CurrenSee Academy as a structured learning journey, not surface-level content
- Building a product that addresses a global gap: energy understanding for consumers
- Making energy feel visible, approachable, and empowering through thoughtful UX and storytelling
What we learned
We learned that energy literacy is not just an education issue but also a climate issue. People want to save energy, lower waste, and support sustainability, but they need tools that meet them where they are. Generative AI becomes most powerful when it doesn’t replace experts, but when it helps everyday people finally understand what’s been hidden in plain sight.
What's next for CurrenSee
This is only the beginning. Next, we plan to:
- Expand bill support across more countries and utility providers
- Add personalized energy-saving insights based on household behavior
- Introduce gamified certifications and community challenges
- Partner with utilities and sustainability programs to scale energy literacy globally
CurrenSee’s mission is simple: Energy made easy, so everyone can take part in the future of energy.
