A helping hand for seniors in the AI era

Inspiration

I volunteer as a care deacon at church, where I visit and spend time with senior citizens in their houses or senior living facilities. During these interactions, I have realized the importance of companionship as well as the effect of technology on their lives.

What it does

The 'Everyday Senior Companion' app is a humble attempt to repay those seniors, who have helped a lot in easing our current lives.

  • This app provides necessary information and saves emergency contacts, details of medical conditions, and medications. In case of an emergency, seniors can query the Emergency Information widget as the medical conditions will be pre-populated.
  • The app also has a chat facility in the Emergency Chat widget where they can type in and get suggestions from a chatbot.
  • The app has a groups & forums option to connect and interact with various peer groups based on their interests.
  • It works as a source of inspiration, providing a daily positive quote for the day, knowledge tip of the day, and general information, in which users can type in any query like daily news, weather, etc.

How we built it

I have built this app using Generative-AI models provided by AWS PartyRock. PartyRock is an easy and fun hands-on, Amazon BedRock Playground. Widgets of various types like static text, user input, AI-powered image generation, and chatbot were used in developing this app. The following foundation models were used in the app:

  • Claude : Claude is a foundation model for sophisticated dialogue, creative content generation, and coding.
  • Titan Text Express : Amazon Titan Text Express foundation model is an LLM offering a balance of price and performance. It provides customers with a breadth of high-performing image, multimodal, and text model choices, via a fully managed API.
  • Stable Diffusion XL : The Stable Diffusion XL image generation model generates images of high quality in virtually any art style and is the best open model for photorealism.

Challenges ran into

Understanding the features available in AWS PartyRock and deciding the right features for the project and corresponding widgets.

Accomplishments proud of

I had never heard of AWS PartyRock before registering for the hackathon. I am extremely proud that I learned about such a cool Generative AI playground and used it to create something useful for others.

  3. How to create an app so easily in terms of time, effort, and resources

What's next for Everyday Senior Companion

  • Explore the options to improve the app with phone call options using AmazonConnect.
  • Integrate with Amazon Polly, which helps to convert the text generated to speech.
  • Explore more about Generative AI and its possibilities in the field of gerontology as well as software testing.
