Inspiration Students can find thousands of answers online, but finding an explanation that actually makes sense to them can be very difficult. We were inspired to build Q to solve this exact issue: helping learners understand complex topics by adapting the explanation to their unique way of learning, rather than giving them a generic answer.
What it does curio is an AI-powered educational tutor designed to make learning more accessible and adaptable. When a user asks a question (like "What is photosynthesis?"), curio provides three different explanation modes:
Plain and Simple: Uses clear, accessible language without complex jargon.
Real-world Analogy: Connects abstract concepts to familiar everyday ideas.
Step-by-Step: Breaks down the topic into a logical, easy-to-follow sequence.
How we built it We built curio using a mobile-first approach to ensure students can access high-quality educational support directly from their phones. We designed the web interface focusing on simplicity and ease of use, leveraging AI to process prompt structures and structure explanations into three distinct learning styles.
Challenges we ran into One of our biggest challenges was working entirely within mobile constraints and ensuring that the three explanation modes provided clear, distinct, and accurate answers without overwhelming the user visually on small screens.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We are extremely proud of creating a functional, user-centric tool that transforms a single educational question into multiple tailored explanations. We succeeded in designing a solution that prioritizes true understanding over quick copy-paste answers.
What we learned Building Curio taught us how important it is to design educational tools tailored for different learning styles. We learned how to structure AI prompts effectively to generate clear analogies and simplified explanations, and how to optimize a web application to deliver a seamless user experience directly on mobile devices.
What's next for CURIO Next, we plan to expand Q by adding voice interaction, expanding the library of interactive analogies, and building downloadable summaries so students can easily review their lessons offline
