Far too often we try to assist kids and change their behavior for the better through programs that specifically target them. However, what's often overlooked are the parents. Ranging from economic status to religion to education level, parents.
Our program is meant to target the parents and give them the education and tools they need to make better strategies of leading healthy lives for their children. We want to break the disconnect between parents and children by figuring out what physical activities and motivation techniques children enjoy, and provide that information for parents.
We did this through using IBM's Watson Tone Analyzer. We filtered tweets based on the hashtag used, and then used the tone analyzer to see if there was a common tone used in tweets that use certain hashtags. By doing this, we could determine if activities like cardio had a positive or negative connotation.
The second step to our project was then taking these twitter analytics and inserting the information into a chatbot. Our chatbot is a Facebook page that you can message in which a computer will automatically respond to you. The chatbot presents the information to the parents in a convenient way as no download or installation is necessary - all a parent has to do is message the Facebook page from their messenger application. This was done using Chatfuel.
Building this was definitely not an easy ride. Trying to figure out how to use the Watson API over a huge collection of tweets was challenging for us and pretty time consuming. Because of how time consuming the use of the API was, it made us a little bit more restrained in some of the other features we could add. However we were extremely proud of what we were able to make and we look forward to adding more features. We see potential in adding more of a social aspect to this project, and coming up with features for various users of our project to communicate with one another.
