Inspiration

"Is this safe for me?" is a simple question that millions of people with lifestyle diseases struggle with every day when they shop for packaged food. * Medical advice is not always available, ingredient labels are complicated, and current apps only offer general nutrition information. We were motivated to create CuraScan in order to close this gap by utilizing AI to translate unclear food labels into understandable, tailored health recommendations.

What does it do?

An AI-powered smartphone app called CuraScan scans the ingredient list of packaged food and instantly informs users if it is safe to eat. The app helps users make confident food choices by providing a clear Safe or Unsafe verdict along with ingredient-level explanations based on the user's health profile, allergies, dietary preferences, and prescriptions.

How do we build it?

For a seamless cross-platform experience, we used Flutter and Dart in the development of CuraScan. Real-time data processing and authentication are powered by Firebase. After ingredient text is extracted via OCR using Google Cloud Vision, it is processed using NLP and AI logic to match against customized health rules. The prototype has been thoroughly tested and is fully operational.

Challenges we ran into.

It was difficult to accurately extract ingredient text from various packaging formats. Careful rule design was necessary to map ingredients to several health conditions without false positives. Another major obstacle we had to overcome was striking a balance between the UI's simplicity and the intricate backend logic.

What we discovered

We discovered that in health-tech solutions, personalization is essential. Simplicity, clarity, and transparency are key components of user trust. Additionally, we obtained practical experience combining scalable mobile architecture, AI logic, and OCR into a single, coherent product.

CuraScan's future

In order to increase accuracy over time, we intend to train our AI models using user reviews and feedback. A smart food scoring system, offline scan prediction, and an AI chatbot for dietitians are among the upcoming features. Our long-term objective is to enable every Indian household to use CuraScan as a daily health decision assistant.
