Inspiration

We got inspired by a lot of waste and environment issues created by used coffee cups.

What it does

While spending time in nature, we noticed that one of the most common types of litter is single-use cups. We realised we can prevent this issue by proposing a deposit system. Using this system, people who order coffee or soft drinks for take-out would pay a deposit fee and be able to return the cups to deposit points. The returned cups would be cleaned and reused again. Our system would work by adding QR codes to every cup. Upon returning the cup, a person would put it into a circular shaped slot and the deposit machine would scan both the QR code and the cup itself to prevent fraud. The person could get his money back through an NFC slot to a phone app, or directly to a bank card. The idea also extends to people being able to leave the cups basically anywhere by tagging it‘s location. Using the app, other people could see all tagged cups and collect them. The deposit money would then be split by a percentage – part of the money is returned to the person who ordered the coffee or soft drink (therefore they would be motivated to tag the cup), and another part to the person who brought the cup to the deposit point. This would open up opportunities for people to make small additional income by picking up left cups.

How we built it

We build an app using Android Studio and Kotlin programming language. We also used HTML, CSS, JavaScript for some parts of our application. For the design we used Adobe After Effects and Adobe XD for designing it and

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was to make barcode scanning working correctly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we build a working prototype which contains of the app and a drop off point.

What we learned

We learnt new facts about amount of waste is produced by coffee cups.

What's next for Cupsy

Implement this system and see how it works in reality
