Inspiration
Australia boasts a world-class coffee culture, but buried within it is a fascinating paradox: while the Flat White is our celebrated favorite, the standard Cappuccino is the most frequently ordered drink. Our research revealed why: sheer panic at the espresso counter. To locals, the rules are second nature, but to tourists, international students, or coffee newbies, our unwritten terminology (like a 'Long Black' or the complex variations of an 'Iced Coffee') is an intimidating puzzle. We realized we were unintentionally gatekeeping our coffee culture. We wanted to decode this language so newcomers could confidently order their preferred cup instead of settling for the safest, most globally recognized bet.
What it does
Cupparoos is a B2B digital plug-in that transforms the café ordering experience for both the customer and the business. While waiting in line or sitting at a table, customers scan a QR code to enter a beautifully simplistic, virtual café experience directly on their smartphone—no app download required.
The platform provides interactive visuals, clear ingredient breakdowns, flavor specifications, and smart tips to help users match a brew to their palate. Once a customer finds their perfect match, they hit "Save," locking the exact drink, milk choice, size, and sugar level on their screen. This allows them to approach the barista with absolute certainty. For café owners, Cupparoos embeds seamlessly into their existing website, allowing them to personalize the aesthetics and menu while solving operational bottlenecks by speeding up the queue.
How we built it
We started by looking closely at the customer journey, conducting user interviews and applying thematic analysis to gather core requirements. This research highlighted that customers have idle time in the queue, a smartphone in hand, and a willingness to explore if they feel supported.
From there, we focused on translating these insights into a high-fidelity prototype. We designed an intuitive mobile-first interface that prioritizes visual clarity over dense text.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest hurdles was figuring out the delivery mechanism. Initially, it's tempting to build a standalone consumer app, but user friction is incredibly high when asking tourists to download something for a single cup of coffee. Additionally, balancing the wealth of Australian coffee information—flavor profiles, cultural fun facts, and exact ratios—without overwhelming the user's mobile screen was challenging
