WeCupertino

In Santa Clara and Cupertino, there are 4 main challenges which interfere with Civic Engagement and Civic Responsibility 1) Lack of Awareness: In our community a lot of the events and elected officials are unknown to the citizens 2) Lack of Motivation: There are no incentives to help out in the community or participate in Elections 3) Unaware of Effect: People in our community are unaware of how Elections, Volunteering and particpation in the community affects them 4) Safety Concerns: Cupertino ranks a score of 35 in the Crime Index Scale, where 100 is the safest. This prevents people from participating because of the fear of Crimes happening towards them

What Inspired us? 1) Lack of participation in Elections: in Cupertino a mere 49% of the people who were eligible to vote, voted in the last presidential election, In other elections that number drops even lower 2) Low Safety Rating: Cupertino's low safety rating prevents people from enjoying our community 3) Love for Cupertino: Both of us have been members of Cupertino since birth, the chance to have a real impact on our community is a major factor influencing us to participate

How We Built the App? Building this application was especially difficult for us because we had to make sure that the entire UI was easily accessible and feasible for people of all ages. This forced us to plan a strategy and User Interface for the entire application before we even started coding. After building the UI we started working on the application of everything 1) Google Sign In: This was especially harder for us in the beginning as we were trying to achieve an app which was built and reliant on Firebase, however after watching a couple of videos and starting to code we were able to achieve a sign-in page that was able to communicate with a Firebase Project and register users as they signed in 2) Main Home Page: This page was mostly UI and graphics, however we ran into complication while trying to build the interface by saying welcome %USERNAME%. We struggled with understanding how to get private data from firebase, however after moving the code into the the same class as Google Sign In we were able to fix this issue and build a complicated but easy to use Interface 3) Voting and Resources: These pages involved us creating code that would link to different websites and PDF Files. It was not too complicated and we were able to achieve this in a timely and efficient manner 4) Events: This page involved us sending live updates between different classes, This page also required us to make an Application that would update and save scores of different users over time. We first had to create a temporary database of information that would later be used. We did so by scraping the Cupertino Webiste for information on the upcoming events they had. We then created a user friendly UI which shows peoples scores getting updated in live time. 5) Safety: This section was personally important to us because in the past we have had to bike at night and have had our bicycles stolen. We also faced a lot of challanges while building this section of the Application. We first had to learn how to use the Google Maps API and create an entire map of our County. We then had to learn and understand how to draw various lines in the map. This involved us spending a lot of time communicating different methods to do the following acitons. We also had to spend a large chunk of time placing the various lines accross the screen
