Inspiration
University students, especially new students during their transition period, often experience burnout and struggle to manage both academics and their personal well-being. Cuore makes health fun and social by letting friends connect and compete on step leaderboards to see who can take more steps, complete the most tasks and grow the best garden.
Core Features
- Garden & Leaderboard: A virtual garden that grows as you level up. You earn points by completing habits, drinking water, and walking. A step leaderboard shows who is on top alongside their garden.
- Document Uploader: A place to upload scanned test reports and appointment emails so you never lose your important documents.
- Daily Schedule: An AI-generated checklist made for your health and fitness goals.
- Habit Trackers: A medication tracker with reminders, a water logger, and a daily diary.
- Calendar: Connects to your personal calendar to track upcoming appointments and send reminders.
- Text to speech and Speech to text functions - For accessibility needs.
How we built it
We used the open source platform OpenCode, which was connected to the Integrated Development Environment Visual Studio Code. We gave the model prompts on the features we wanted to include and the design requirements of the app. Although creating the program with the model initially seemed straightforward, we had to iteratively test the program and change any features that didn't work or any bugs we came across. We used Canva to design the logo of our program, and GitHub to create the public repository link. We also decided to publish our web app on Netlify, so it is accessible by anyone who has access to the link.
Challenges we ran into
- Deciding between a mobile app or a web app: A mobile app can incorporate significantly more functionality than a web app. However, due to the time frame of the project and the great complexity in designing a mobile app, we decided to create a web app that is designed for mobiles.
- Narrowing the scope: It was hard for our group to decide on one specific focus because health apps are very broad, and we wanted to make sure it catered specifically to students without turning it into a complex clinical tool.
- Medical liability: Making sure the app only helps students organise their health and does not give actual medical advice or diagnoses.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Made a working prototype that mixes practical health tools with a fun gaming reward system.
- Collaborated within the strict timeframe through close teamwork, role delegation, prioritisation and problem-solving; we are especially proud of overcoming every hurdle we faced, working hard to refine our project together.
- Designed a clean and smooth UI that makes student timetable management simple and approachable.
- Promoted inclusion and accessibility by integrating both a Web Speech API and IIElevenLabs speech-to-text and text-to-speech API to enable a wide range of users to engage with our app. In the Settings menu, there is an option to use the default IIElevenLabs API that we created, or the user can create their own API key and upload it to the program.
What we learned
As our first Hackathon with most members of our team having little to no coding experience, we went in not knowing what to expect. We struggled with narrowing down down and solidifying the core of our project. Throughout the Hackathon, we grew more comfortable communicating effectively within our group to create a programme objective we could all be proud of. We also gained a lot of technical experience and knowledge, for example, learning how to integrate APIs into web apps, the relevance of domains, and becoming more proficient in VS Code. There were also many opportunities to develop our soft skills throughout this project as we have mentioned in this Devpost.
What's next for Cuore - The Student Health App
In the future development of Cuore, we plan to add additional features that were not able to be included due to the strict time frame of the project.
- Adjusting tasks to fit the user's fitness level and health goals
- Building shared group gardens for friends and family
- Creating a login page where the user can sign up with their email, username, or Google account
- Options to plant different types of flowers, and certain flowers are unlocked when the user levels up
- A daily streak option, that keeps track of consecutive logs in the logbook
- More accessibility features: auto translation of the web app for a variety of languages, adding a dark mode theme for those who prefer darker colours, a adjustable font size slider
