Inspiration

The inspiration behind this project comes from the desire to better support students facing challenges like food insecurity, housing issues, and mental health struggles. We wanted to create a tool that connects students to the resources they need.

What it does

CUNY Students Matter is a web app that educates students on key issues such as food insecurity, housing, and mental health. Based on student responses, the app generates personalized links to resources and support services catered to specific CUNY colleges.

How we built it

Our website was designed in Figma from scratch and built using the React framework. The development stack includes HTML, Node.js, and Tailwind CSS, ensuring a modern and responsive design.

Challenges we ran into

We aimed to ensure that CUNY students receive personalized lists of resources available at their specific schools. To achieve this, we developed a quiz that assesses each student's concerns and matches them with the relevant resources. The challenge was to design a dynamic set of questions that adapts based on the student's needs. Additionally, we had to utilize their responses to identify their school and connect them with the appropriate resources provided by their institution

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take pride in our website’s ability to connect CUNY students in need with personalized resources. Our responsive design ensures seamless access across all devices—whether on a phone, tablet, or laptop. Beyond school-specific resources, we also offer links to government support, ensuring assistance for every CUNY student.

What we learned

We gained valuable insights into the needs of CUNY students and used this understanding to create a platform that connects them with the resources they need most. From technical perspective, we learned to use react framework while building the website.

What's next for CUNY Students Matter

We plan on expanding the website to contain more resources. We are all aware the importance of internships and jobs while in college. We plan to add resources that could help CUNY students land an internship or job while they are still in college. We want to take student's feedback and utilize it to make the website more accessible to users.

I worked on the UI and made the necessary resource prompted out depending by the user's college choice and issue their having. I debugged the error with Farhikhta where the college won't get prompted after user selects them.

I like to build stuff.
I worked on the mockup of the website on Figma with Fei by scratch. I then brought the visual to life through React and made the landing/home page.

I focused on the quiz section of our React application with Farhikhta, where I learned to make better use of React Router’s navigation and routing features to redirect users to the correct results pages. I also resolved a redirect issue that initially seemed complex but was fixed with a simple solution after hours of debugging.

Sabeha Khan
I focused on the quiz section of our React application, where I learned how to use react hooks. I also worked on the styling of the quiz page. I debugged the problem of not getting the resource links for specific college with Fei. I also research resources available in each CUNY college to make the quiz college specific.
