Inspiration

Art galleries and some of the museums in Germany and many other countries are getting ready to open their doors to visitors. Are they ready to handle the number of people at a time keep the physical distancing in the times of Covid-19? Well, we are already get used to queuing up for supermarkets, but how about booking our visiting hours in advance to avoid waiting hours in front of a museum or gallery? Art can heal us, teach us and transform us. Opening the doors of museums (not only art but also educational museums) will help us to recover. But we can easily use an app to book our visiting hour in advance and also ask for a educator and art mediator to join us. We need to be ready for a new life beyond experience things only online.

What it does

The app CultureVultures will allow art-goers to book their tickets and visiting hours. Each institution will define its maximum number of visitors at a time so that the availability will shown in the app. During the lockdown, many big institutions canceled their contract with freelance art educators and art mediators. This app will allow booking an art educator either on-site or via the app. The educators can also enter their free time in the slot system so the visitors can choose their visiting time if they want to see the exhibition through the art mediators. The app will allow online call possibilities for art educators & mediators who can join from their home. So that a part-time art educator who needs to take care of their kids can continue working. Of course we expect that senior people who are not digital-natives and some handicapped people may not be able to use the app to book their visit. For that reason, museums will allow a certain number for those visitors that are not listed on the app and these non-digital visitors could go to the museums without in-advance booking.

How I built it

This pitch needs a team of API and UX designer. Since I was not successful to recruit team members during the EUvsVirus Hackathon, the concept does not have a demo to show.

Challenges I ran into

As a person who is a curator and art professional, this is my very first time in a hackathon. For that reason, I could not recruit members to develop the concept, structure it together with hands of designers and app developers.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I believe that my initial idea has transformed into a product, which can be executed with the right people and help the revival of the cultural institutions smoothly in the post-Covid-19 era.

What I learned

This was my very first hackathon. Throughout the hackathon, I have learned a lot, how people answer each other and how people are open to join teams. This thought me a lot, however, I was not proactive enough in these two days (plus 2 more days since I registered to slack channels) to bring together a team.

What's next for CultureVultures Booking App

We will rethink and restructure the way we experience our lives. How we shop, how we meet with friends and families have been already transformed. But we will find a way to learn from these times for a better life. Art is a powerful tool to recover from traumas. But we should be still very careful in order to protect each other. So we need to find solutions to go back to our routines with new strategies. We cannot experience all the cultural events online, we need a hybrid model that museums and art galleries can use digital tools to regulate their visitors and keep their staff healthy.
