In today’s interconnected, post-cookie world, understanding people goes beyond demographics — it’s about decoding their cultural DNA. We realized that someone who enjoys indie folk music might also prefer sustainable fashion, vegan cuisine, and nature-based travel. These aren't random — they form cultural clusters.

Inspired by this, we envisioned a platform that uncovers these cross-domain cultural affinities using advanced AI — without collecting personal data. By combining Qloo’s cultural intelligence and Gemini AI, we built CultureSense, a privacy-respecting platform that maps the culture behind consumer choices.

What it does

CultureSense is an AI-powered cultural intelligence platform that helps individuals and brands understand cultural affinities across music, food, fashion, travel, and more.

How we built it

Architecture and Stack:

  • Frontend: Next.js 14 with App Router, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion
  • Backend: Node.js with Express.js, Supabase Auth, PostgreSQL
  • APIs: Qloo for cultural intelligence, Gemini AI for analysis and recommendations
  • DevOps: Vercel for frontend, Railway for backend deployment

Challenges we ran into

  • API Response Normalization: Qloo and Gemini returned vastly different structures. We had to create robust backend transformations.
  • Type Safety and Integration: Managing types and error handling across dynamic third-party responses in TypeScript was complex.
  • UX Simplification: Making cultural intelligence accessible and meaningful to both individual and business users required thoughtful UX design.
  • Performance: Optimizing response time while managing multiple external API calls required smart caching and throttling.
