Inspiration
We created CultureMate to make everyday discovery more personal. People often switch between different apps to choose a movie, find music, explore food, or plan an outing. We wanted to bring these choices together in one experience that reflects a person’s interests, cultural preferences, mood, and budget.
What it does
CultureMate helps users discover movies, music, food, fashion, and places. Users can customize their taste profile, filter recommendations by category and mood, save favourites, and create a simple day plan with estimated food spending.
How we built it
We built the prototype using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, managed the source code through GitHub, and deployed it as a Render Static Site.
The current recommendation engine ranks a curated catalogue using language preferences, mood, dietary choices, and budget. Preferences and favourites are stored locally in the user’s browser.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was making recommendations feel relevant across several categories while working with a limited catalogue. Another was configuring deployment correctly: the project needed static hosting rather than a Node.js web service. We also simplified the folder structure so the application could open directly from its deployed URL.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built and deployed a working CultureMate prototype that brings five lifestyle categories into one interface. Created personalized recommendations based on language preferences, mood, dietary choices, and budget. Added saved favourites and a day planner with estimated food spending. Designed a responsive experience for desktop and mobile. Overcame deployment challenges and successfully published the project through GitHub and Render.
What we learned
We learned how to translate a broad lifestyle concept into a working prototype, create preference-based recommendations, and design a responsive interface. We also gained practical experience with GitHub uploads, deployment configuration, and troubleshooting hosting errors.
What's next for CULTUREMATE AI
We plan to integrate Qloo’s taste intelligence for cross-category discovery and add a conversational AI assistant that explains recommendations. Future improvements include Google and email authentication, cloud-saved profiles, and richer location-based suggestions.
The current version is a functional discovery prototype; Qloo integration, live generative AI, and account authentication are not yet implemented.
