Inspiration

All members of our team had some kind of memory albums/books of our high school or childhood, and we thought it would be nice if the preservation of those memories was done in a more comprehensive and inclusive manner, capturing not only the moments but the culture itself.

What it does

After users create a group, they are invited to play a short interactive game. A word is shown, and each member tries to write down the same association as the others in a short-amount of time. The AI learns from these responses and begins generating words that are increasingly relevant to the group to promote matches, otherwise known as 'cultural artifacts'. Similar to Akinator, it gradually identifies shared patterns and themes, building an understanding of the group’s culture.

Cultured then helps users continue to grow and express their culture through personalised prompts. For example, if football is identified as a part of the group’s culture, the AI might suggest taking a photo while playing football that week. This acts as a simple reminder to capture and share moments. Over time, these are stored in a scrapbook feature within the app, including photos, videos, voice notes, and game summaries—allowing users to preserve their culture so it isn’t lost.

How we built it

We used react native for the mobile app, Supabase for the database and the backend functionality, and Qroq API for AI implementation.

Challenges we ran into

The project is ambitious and required more than 4 days to complete to its full potential.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The game actually does encapsulate the group's culture, as we have tried it on ourselves repeatedly and it has given us astonishing results.

What's next for cultured

The next step is finalising the backend functionality. There are also several features that have been carefully planned but couldn’t be implemented due to time constraints.

For example, we aimed to make the scrapbook more interactive, allowing group members to draw on pages, add stickers, comments, context, and voice notes. We also planned to integrate pattern recognition, enabling the AI to deepen its understanding of the group’s culture based on uploaded media and further personalise prompts, making the experience more dynamic.

Together, these improvements would allow Cultured to better support users in how they preserve and engage with their culture in a more seamless and enjoyable way, shaping the direction for future development.
