Inspiration
The idea came from how the body constantly defends itself. I wanted a game where protecting what you’ve built matters as much as expanding it—and where you can step into the fight yourself.
What it does
Culture combines base building and strategy with arcade battles. Defend against bacterial swarms, swap defenses, and enter a tile’s battlefield to earn new land and upgrades. The Stronghold keeps expanding as you progress.
How we built it
I used Claude and Codex to build an offline HTML5 prototype through prompting, playing, and refining. Development started with the core defense loop, followed by expansion, arcade battles, saves, and guided onboarding
Challenges we ran into
Early versions felt repetitive: claim, build, upgrade. The challenge was making each interaction rewarding while keeping the rules clear and the swarms manageable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Connecting arcade victories to visible growth. Each battle changes the Stronghold you return to, giving the action a lasting purpose. And also, the fact that I could execute this prototype.
What we learned
A working mechanic isn’t enough. Clear instructions, meaningful choices, and visible rewards make a bigger difference than simply adding more content.
What's next for Culture: Tower Defence & Strategy
A complete 3D visual and UX overhaul, more arcade challenges, and smarter enemies. I also want to explore territory loss between visits, encouraging players to return and reinforce their Stronghold. The current prototype pauses while away.
