Inspiration
The inspiration for this project stemmed from witnessing the challenges faced by students and faculty encountering culture shock at DIT University, Dehradun. Exploring their experiences taught us about their coping mechanisms, the impact on academics and social life, and the need for better support systems.
What it does
The project aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), striving to mitigate disparities experienced by individuals facing culture shock. By investigating the impact on mental health, academics, and overall well-being, the initiative aims to foster inclusivity and support cultural integration. Through proposed digital solutions and recommendations, the project seeks to create a more equitable environment, providing better opportunities for all individuals, irrespective of their cultural backgrounds or circumstances.
How we built it
Building this initiative involved meticulous research and collaboration. We conducted in-depth interviews, surveys, and data analysis to comprehend the multifaceted nature of culture shock. Leveraging technology, we developed an interactive platform, meticulously curating resources, coping mechanisms, and tailored solutions. Iterative design processes and user feedback shaped the user-friendly interface.
Challenges we ran into
Due to time limits and the subjective nature of culture shock experiences, our investigation encountered various hurdles, including restricted access to thorough data. The Vastu building at DIT University hampered lengthy studies, and our concentration on foreign students limited the generalizability of our results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a platform that amplifies multiple opinions and provides detailed insights into culture shock is a huge accomplishment. It has been exciting to tailor advice and digital tools to individual experiences and requirements. Furthermore, we are pleased to have built a framework for encouraging inclusion and facilitating smoother transitions.
What we learned
Through this endeavour, we discovered the nuanced impact of culture shock on individuals' mental health, academic performance, and social integration. We also learned the importance of tailoring support systems to diverse cultural backgrounds and the necessity of digital tools to assist in coping with culture shock effectively.
What's next for Culture Connect?
Culture Connect intends to broaden its study reach beyond overseas students in the future to include a more varied demography. In addition, we intend to work with universities, organisations, and mental health professionals to provide complete digital solutions that are culturally appropriate. The objective is to provide a more welcoming and helpful atmosphere for people experiencing culture shock.
