Inspiration
As a group one of our biggest interests has been trading stocks, however more recently we've also gotten involved with buying and investing in limited edition collectibles. However, being first year college students we aren't able to afford the high cost of these collectibles and often miss out. We wanted to bridge the gap between trading, collectibles and low cost for entry, there lies the inspiration for this app.
What it does
Our app allows users to invest in their favorite collectibles with costs as low as one dollar. It provides a platform to monitor the price of famous limited edition collectibles.
How I built it
Our project has been split into a back-end REST API and a front-end cross-platform Flutter project. The API is a Python Django project which is hosted on an AWS server, allowing for easy scalability with a growth in user base. We integrated the front-end and back-end using POST requests.
Challenges I ran into
Database corruption was one of the most prevalent issues, we had to rebuild the database on several occasions. We also faced issues with handling continuous asynchronicity in our beta Svelte web application.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Being able to create a reactive and accurate graph in our Flutter application was quite difficult but worth the effort. We were able to accurately depict price changes using our graph, thus creating a more interactive visual environment in the application.
This was our first time building an independent back-end and front-end, being able to integrate both the end-points seamlessly in such a constrained time-span is something we're proud of.
We were able to define our product as soon as we started and were able to both have a clear vision for the product and execute our goals within the time provided.
What I learned
We learnt not only how to build an API using Django natively, but also how to host that same API on a cloud AWS instance. We also learnt how to make cross-platform responsive applications for both iOS and Android using google's flutter framework. We also learnt how to use POST requests to send and receive data between our API and flutter client side application.
Other than a programming experience, we also learnt how to define our product. We learnt how to plan out the applications requirements and create an efficient time managed plan to reach our goals. The project also forced us to better work as a team when it came to sharing code and managing each others tasks in-order to finish in time.
What's next for Culture
As of now we've only implemented a trading platform between the client and the culture market, however we would like to create a trading environment where there is interaction and sharing of shares of culture between various users. This would amplify the product vision allowing more users to interactively trade shares of culture. Due to the constrained time limit we weren't able to complete our web app however we already a working prototype. We would like to further develop the web app ensuring a smooth bug free experience.
