Inspiration

Have you ever moved to a new city and felt completely lost? Not just geographically, but culturally? You end up in chain restaurants, touristy places that don’t match your energy, and you start wondering… where are my people?I felt exactly that when I moved to Brooklyn. I was excited to explore, but the usual tools—Google Maps, blogs, review sites—kept leading me to the same spots everyone else went to. There was no sense of personal connection, no way to find places that actually matched my identity, interests, or community. Whether you’re into live jazz, open mic poetry, underground clubs, or indie film screenings, we all deserve to find spaces that feel like home. That realization sparked the idea for Cultural Concierge.

What it does

Cultural Concierge is an AI-powered platform that helps people find places and experiences that genuinely align with their cultural identity and personal interests. Instead of offering generic recommendations like “top 10 restaurants,” it learns your unique tastes—whether you’re into jazz, street art, queer film, feminist literature, or underground music—and curates events, venues, and communities that reflect your vibe. It’s not just about what’s popular—it’s about what feels like you.

How we built it

To build Cultural Concierge, we wanted a system that could deeply understand cultural preferences and translate them into meaningful recommendations. For this, we integrated the Qloo API, which provides cultural intelligence based on music, film, food, fashion, and more. It allowed us to match user interests with culturally relevant locations and experiences. On the backend, we used Node.js with Express to handle API requests and serve data efficiently. The frontend was built with React, giving us a dynamic, responsive interface where users could explore recommendations interactively. We used MongoDB for flexible data storage, especially useful for tracking user preferences and feedback.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was translating something as nuanced and personal as culture into data points that an algorithm could understand. Culture isn’t binary—it’s layered, emotional, and often context-dependent. Making sure the recommendations felt authentic, not just accurate, took a lot of iteration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a platform that goes beyond generic recommendations to deliver meaningful, culturally relevant experiences. Successfully integrating the Qloo API, designing a clean, intuitive UI, and building a system that makes users feel seen were major wins. Most of all, we’re proud that Cultural Concierge helps people find not just places—but a sense of belonging.

What we learned

We learned that building for culture means building for people, not just data. Personalization isn’t about algorithms alone—it’s about empathy, context, and nuance. We also realized the importance of clean data, user feedback loops, and designing with emotional intent. Most importantly, we saw how technology can create not just convenience, but connection.

What's next for Cultural Concierge-Lifestyle Matching platform

We plan to expand personalization by integrating more local data sources and event platforms. We’re also working on adding community features—so users can connect with like-minded people—and refining our recommendation engine with user feedback. Long term, we aim to scale to more cities and make Cultural Concierge a go-to guide for cultural belonging worldwide.
