Inspiration
Most AI assistants wait for users to ask a question. However, while traveling, people may not know what to ask or what stories are hidden around them. We created Cultravel to turn AI from a passive question-answering tool into a proactive travel companion that notices where users are, shares meaningful stories, and makes every journey feel less lonely.
What it does
Cultravel uses real-time location data to recognize nearby landmarks and places of interest. When users arrive at a new location, the AI proactively starts a conversation and provides an audio guide featuring local history, culture, traditions, people, and legends.
Instead of requiring users to constantly search or ask questions, Cultravel brings relevant stories to them at the right moment. Users can also continue the conversation, ask follow-up questions, and explore topics that interest them in greater depth.
How we built it
We built Cultravel with real-time geolocation, map services, location-triggered interactions, generative AI, and text-to-speech technology. Location data helps the system understand the user’s surroundings, while AI organizes relevant cultural and historical information into natural, engaging stories.
These stories are delivered through audio, allowing users to explore without constantly looking at their screens. The conversational interface also enables the AI to respond to questions and adapt the experience based on the user’s interests.
Challenges we ran into
One of our main challenges was deciding when the AI should speak. The experience needed to feel helpful and natural rather than repetitive or intrusive.
We also had to accurately connect a user’s location with nearby places, organize information from different sources, generate engaging but reliable stories, and create smooth transitions between proactive narration and user-led conversation.

We transformed the traditional AI interaction model from “ask and answer” into proactive, context-aware companionship.
Cultravel does more than provide information about a destination. It recognizes the user’s surroundings, chooses an appropriate moment to speak, and turns nearby places into stories. By combining location awareness, AI-generated narration, audio, and conversation, we created an experience that feels more like traveling with a knowledgeable friend than using a standard tour guide.
What we learned
We learned that a meaningful AI experience depends not only on what the AI says, but also on when and why it speaks. Proactive AI must understand context, respect the user’s attention, and provide value without interrupting the journey.
We also learned how geolocation, cultural storytelling, generative AI, and voice interaction can work together to make travel more informative, immersive, and emotionally engaging.
What's next for Cultravel
Our next goal is to develop Cultravel from an intelligent audio guide into a personalized AI travel companion.
Users will be able to customize the kind of companion they want. Some may prefer a knowledgeable guide who provides detailed historical and cultural explanations, while others may want a more relaxed and expressive travel buddy who offers conversation, encouragement, humor, and emotional support.
Over time, Cultravel could learn each user’s interests, communication style, travel habits, and preferred balance between knowledge and companionship. It could recommend personalized routes, remember shared travel experiences, react to the user’s mood, and develop a consistent personality throughout the journey.
Even when someone travels alone, Cultravel aims to make the experience feel shared—as if a curious, knowledgeable, and supportive friend were exploring the world alongside them.
