Inspiration

Netflix' Innovative CYOA challenge ignited the basis of the project. Collaboration lead much of the project from the get-go and as such has had a couple of inspirations, such as Disco Elysium, Telltale Games, Danganronpa, and Bandersnatch.

What it is

Cultel California is a dark-fantasy CYOA game with a Neo-Noir aesthetic centered around playing as the result of a Cult Experiment. The player would follow the guidance of three bickering adventurers that are trapped inside their mind, creating contextual actions and choices to fully immerse the player.

How we built it

Cultel California was made using Unity 2022, Google Docs, and Procreate. We story-boarded early on and outlined the general paths we wanted to explore for the project and set expectations early on for ourselves.

Challenges we ran into

Time crunch was a major issue for coding implementation, much of the interactive CYOA choices had to be cut from the initial release and pushed aside to prioritize implementation of basic systems. This was also exacerbated by our near-constant need to relocate due to sheer congestion of the location at the FIU Campus.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The art assets were fully completed and at a very satisfactory level for the team. The writing process was also well executed and very creatively driven. Our team is proud of the scripts for the codes inner workings that are completed. We are additionally proud of our team's ability to pivot and flex into multiple new roles when faced with unforeseen issues that rendered contemporary methods unviable, not to mention that we are an entirely First-Time Hacker team. The team is also very proud of our scope control, as much of our expectations and communication with each other were on-task and almost always meaningful.

What's next for Cultel California

Past it's initial release, Cultel California will soon be fully expanded to match the initial vision. The team has talked about practical ways to continue working on this project over the coming weeks, and we are determined to bringing this project to its full creative fruition.
