Culinary Time Machine

Inspiration

I always had a interest in history and well.. who doesn't love food! It's the best of both worlds if you ask me.

What it does

The culinary time machine is a interactive web application that allows you to explore and cook different recipes from different eras. You input the ingredients that you have/want in your dish and it will give you a dish, image, ingredient list and recipe for you to make it.

How we built it

I built this project using entirely react/js with the help of tailwindcss to make my life easier. I used googles gemini api to get the recipe information and image generation.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into some trouble with some other free API's due to the limits on them, as well as the image generation with google.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that I managed to complete this hackathon within the tight deadline with a finished product that I can be proud of and even expand on. This was my first time implementing AI in a project, I learned a lot about API's and AI in the process.

What we learned

This project really pushed me to leverage AI to learn AI (read that twice lol). With such a limit on time tools like ChatGPT and gemini came in clutch when resolving bugs and learning new concepts that I could apply.

What's next for Culinary Time Machine

I imagine I could add accounts to the site which would allow users to share recipes with each other as well as storing recipes more securely. The current generator is pretty random in terms of what kind of food is generated but I definitely could add options such as region, specific eras and spice levels to make more specific recipes if the user craves a certain type of food.
