I built Cuida HOU for the Impact Hub Houston hackathon because I saw a gap that none of the 14 posted challenges addressed: gender equality, one of Impact Hub's four priority goals, alongside decent work, reduced inequalities and sustainable cities. Houston is two-thirds Black and Latino. It has 44 childcare-desert ZIP codes, 28 of them chronic, and women here work at lower rates than residents overall, partly because they can't find care near home. The information about licensed care exists, but it's scattered and mostly in English. Nothing helps grow the supply of seats in the neighborhoods that need them most. Cuida HOU uses public data to open two doors. Parents can search in Spanish or English for licensed care they can actually reach. Women in those same neighborhoods get a clear, source-backed path to opening a licensed home daycare. Each new provider adds seats for working families and creates a woman-owned small business in a community that has been overlooked for too long.
