Inspiration
We wanted to create something handheld, intuitive, and fun that supports both short and long breaks for office workers who are tired after long hours of work. The idea was to make a desktop-friendly tool that encourages focus, playful interaction, and social engagement, without relying on screens.
What it does
cubik+ is a multi-game, handheld puzzle cube designed for both single-player and multiplayer use. It offers a different game or challenge, such as tic-tac-toe, a marble maze, or colour matching. The cube allows users to: engage physically and mentally, play solo or pass it around for collaborative fun, interact verbally while playing, encouraging team communication, and carry it anywhere thanks to its compact, intuitive design.
How we built it
We designed cubik+ using 3D-printed PLA filament. To CAD it we used OnShape as well as SolidWorks.
Challenges we ran into
- Figuring out how the cube would function mechanically using only 3D-printed parts.
- Ensuring the marble maze was solvable.
- Making sure pieces included the duality of tic-tac-toe symbols and the marble maze.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Integrated multiple games and challenges into a single handheld, compact cube.
- Designed the cube so it could support both single-player and multiplayer interactions.
What's next for cubik+
Our goal is to bring cubik+ to a broader audience, including:
- Children, as a screen-free alternative to digital devices
- Adults, as a productive, fun office desk companion
- Elders, as a potential tool to help prevent age-related neurological decline (e.g., Alzheimer’s)
